Job Description

The Research Assistant III will play a key role in supporting the Cellular Engineering core facility at The Jackson Laboratory, which specializes in human stem cell technologies including genome editing, reprogramming, and differentiation. This position will focus on performing human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) differentiation into various cell types of interest for JAX researchers and collaborators. The successful candidate will execute established differentiation protocols, optimize methods as needed, and ensure high-quality, reproducible results. Responsibilities include maintaining stem cell cultures, monitoring cell health, documenting experimental progress, and troubleshooting technical challenges. Prior hands-on experience with human stem cell culture is required. Familiarity with quality control assays (e.g., immunostaining, flow cytometry, gene expression analysis) is highly desirable. The RAIII will collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders, contributing to project planning and providing technical expertise to advance research goals.


The Research Assistant III works under minimum supervision applies a broad knowledge of laboratory principles in planning, developing, conducting and evaluating scientific research in a laboratory, clinic, field and/or teaching environment. Incumbents understand the context and implications of the research in order to apply and interpret theoretical knowledge necessary to conduct research in one or more scientific disciplines. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: project planning, experimental design, developing methodology, conducting procedures, modifying procedures as needed, data collection and analysis, laboratory management, project management, preparing publications and reports, and communication and instruction. Employees demonstrate and model effective mental concentration, visual attention and manipulative skills. Research Assistant III includes the training and direct supervision of staff, students and others in performing specific techniques or phases of experiments. Incumbents are required to work flexible shifts that may include evenings, week-ends and/or holidays depending on the demands of the research and/or laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Proposes alternative research methods, techniques and initiatives demonstrating knowledge of other scientific areas and related research Demonstrates scientific knowledge and analytical skills to monitor, modify, and design the research process. Designs, modifies, and troubleshoots highly specialized equipment. Independently expands scope of literature search to support and/or propose alternative experimental methods, procedures and/or techniques. Gathers information to prepare budget and proposes estimates for acquisition of supplies and equipment Analyzes and resolves variations in complex tests, experiments and procedures; designs and implements modifications and changes to techniques, procedures and quality control measures Leads multiple, concurrent projects and/or multi-faceted projects; directs others in making modifications Evaluates documentation of results; leads efforts to modify and adapt research methodologies in collaboration with others; ensures compliance with regulatory standards. Manages laboratory resources, may include budget and personnel; establishes priorities in the use of resources including space, field, equipment and/or facilities. Understands research goals thoroughly; can instruct and inform others about past and future research directives. Also coordinates with outside collaborators to open new avenues or points of interest of research. Shows a willingness to teach as well as be taught. The RA III may have direct supervisory responsibilities and is accountable to ensure the effective training and development program for assigned personnel and to identify and develop staff. The RAIII is responsible to develop training and development programs to strengthen technical and management skills.

Pay range: $52,712 - $68,525
