General Summary

Perform a variety of routine and specialized technical procedures. Schedules examinations in accordance with MRI protocols and procedures. Maintains a smooth operational and productive workflow.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

Clinical Practice/Patient Care - Operates Magnetic Resonance Imaging technical equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures according to the Diagnostic Imaging Department\'s P&P manual.

A. Demonstrates clinical competence in Musculoskeletal, Neuro. Body and Cardiac imaging protocols. Mentors new radiographers and other support staff

B. Demonstrates competence in computers and information processing, computer applications, image capture, display and storage. Can identify and resolve rudimentary PACS problems Has the ability to fix studies in the private area in collaboration with IDXRAD

C. Responds to patient care emergencies. Understands and demonstrates MR and patient safety.

D. Triage of patients in line with Radiologists\' clinical protocol priorities

E. Demonstrates knowledge of skills and practice necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population and age of the patients. Educates and oversees new radiographer/ support personnel and students to Diagnostic Imaging specific age related protocols.

F. Demonstrates continuing education in MRI.

G. Initiates and Documents QA activities appropriately.

H. Has an advanced knowledge base in factors that govern and influence image production. Selects appropriate technical factors on an individual patient basis.

I. Provides patient safety and protection in accordance with federal and state regulatory agencies, accreditation agencies and health care organizations. Mentors new radiographers in department specific protocols.

J. Documents all potential or actual patient/equipment problems. In conjunction with the Supervisor establishes practice patterns to ensure

K. Utilizes universal precautions at all times when working with patients. Assists in the education and competency training for all staff involving infection control

Leadership

A. Coordinates with the Supervisor and Medical Director daily work activities of MRI scanner in accordance to MRI standard practices.

B. Participates in the scheduling, review of work with support personnel on their assigned shift. Helps to establish procedures to ensure quality control standards and with optimal efficiency.

C. Reviews requests for radiology procedures and sets priorities with the assistance of the radiologists Supervisor when necessary

D. Works with Chief Tech in enforcing and implementing safe work practices by explaining and interpreting applicable UMMS policies and state, JCAHO and appropriate federal regulations. Complies with and ensures that staff wear the appropriate protective clothing and observe "Universal Precautions" when working with patients.Unit Management

A. Notifies and assists Chief Tech with implementation of protocol changes.

B. Communicates with clinicians regarding patient preparation for procedures. Reports technical problems/conflicts.

C. Ensures unit-based products availability (i.e. O2 tubing, etc.)

D. Assists in expense account cost saving initiatives

Preceptor

A. Orients and trains radiology technical and support staff, directing and instructing staff on procedures and departmental policies and standards, as directed (will include equipment).

B. Serves as primary preceptor to new staff and students

C. Performs BI yearly in service for MRI technical personnel

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology; registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists; licensed by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is required. Advanced Certification in MRI is required. CPR certification is preferred.
  • Knowledge in computer applications and cross sectional anatomy required.
  • One to two years knowledge/understanding of Magnetic Resonance Principles and Practices.
