The Radioactive Materials Branch Licensing Team Supervisor (RMB-LTS) supervises, coordinates and directs all licensing activities of the Branch while providing personnel management to the other 4 Health Physicist II positions focused on in-house technical projects (licensing and sealed source & device reviews). Position works closely with the Radioactive Materials Branch Manager (RMBM) to maintain and decide on best uses of Branch resources (staffing, equipment, budgets, knowledge base, etc.) to complete all necessary tasks. It is the responsibility of this position is to ensure that all licensing activities of radioactive material and accelerators are in accordance with the regulations adopted by the NC Radiation Protection Commission (10A NCAC 15).

This employee supervises staff for the licensing of radioactive material and accelerators. This employee implements the training program criteria for all new employees. For this position the employee spends considerable time doing consultative work and analysis with each license reviewer to determine consistency in the performance of technical documentation review and approval. This is necessary to keep the reviewers informed of changes in the State and Federal Regulations and keep the manager abreast of conditions and circumstances related to the licensing.

The RMB-LTS also coordinates and provides technical consultation to health professionals, government agencies, private industry, occupational workers, and concerned citizens regarding quality assurance, health physics and radiation protection.

Job responsibilities include the following:
  • Licensing of all radioactive material and accelerator licensees.
  • Ensure adequate safety and safeguards for radioactive materials.
  • Maintain adequate staffing levels and training qualifications to perform required activities.
  • License safeguard and increased threat facilities for adequate security measures to protect homeland security.
  • Maintain staffing and programs sufficient to evaluate engineering designs and safety evaluations for any radioactive source or device manufactured within the State\xe2\x80\x99s borders for sale throughout the country.
Travel is required with some overnights. 24/7 availability is required in the event of a radiologic incident.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
To receive credit for all of your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form. Qualified candidates must document on the application that they possess all of the following:
  • Considerable knowledge of the biological effects of radiation, both from the industrial and medical radiation uses and the principles and use of radiation in medicine, institutions, and industry.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Incident Command System and National Incident Management System.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to radiation safety, transportation, waste, disposal, etc.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Agreement State process and the Integrated Material Performance Evaluation Program.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles of radiation detection, measurement and/or instrumentation.
  • Considerable knowledge of physics, radiochemistry, radiobiology and/or mathematics.
  • Ability to properly assess and handle technically difficult and controversial problem areas in the radiation protection field.
  • Ability to train staff, mentor and coach employees in areas needing improvement.
  • Ability to address and satisfy customer expectations while ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
  • Two years demonstrated as a successful manager or supervisor, preferably with at least 1 year supervising radiation professionals.
  • Agreement State experience.
  • Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of personnel, program and budget. management.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor\'s degree in nuclear, physical, or environmental science; health/ medical physics, or radiologic science from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of applicable experience;
-OR-
an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirement
Valid North Carolina Driver\'s License
