Job Description


Join a Leading National Lab in Radiation Physics. The Lawrence Berkeley National Lab\xe2\x80\x99s (LBNL) Advanced Light Source Division (ALS) has an opening for a Radiation Physicist to join the team. In this role, you will be tasked with high-impact assignments that require experience with radiation physics at particle accelerators.
The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. This position will be filled at a Level 3 or 4 depending on the skills, knowledge, and experience of the candidate.
Level 3 Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct, with minimal supervision, radiological risk assessments and design of protective measures to minimize radiation exposure of people and of the environment
  • Execute radiation calculations and specify requirements for shielding of accelerators and beamlines
  • Organize and perform radiation measurements campaigns
  • Manage and provide oversight of operational radiation safety aspects
  • Work jointly with accelerator and beamline engineers in the design of equipment and shielding to minimize radiation damage
  • Participate in research and development activities in radiation physics in support of the ALS & LBL mission and publish results
Level 4 Responsibilities Include:
  • Develop and direct activities within the ALS Radiation Safety program
  • Contribute to the design and development of all ALS Radiation Safety Systems, including radiation monitoring and personnel protection systems
  • Be a strong presence in configuration control management
  • Participate in reviews of incidents involving radiation-associated events, components, and procedures
  • Take a leading role in radiation-safety policy making at the ALS and in working groups across peer labs
  • Propose and lead research activities in the field of Radiation Physics
  • Participate in ALS Division and Lab-wide committees and working groups

What is Required:
  • For Level 3 Master in Radiation Physics or Nuclear Engineering and 3 years of experience, for Level 4 PhD in Radiation Physics or Nuclear Engineering and 5 years of experience, working in an accelerator environment, including demonstrated experience with shielding design, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Demonstrated in-depth experience dealing with Monte Carlo radiation generation and transport codes (e.g. FLUKA, MCNP, PHITS)
  • In-depth knowledge of radiological hazard analysis and shielding design methods
  • Knowledge of applicable radiation protection regulations and requirements
  • Knowledge of theory and operation of radiation monitoring equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within collaborations
  • Proven excellent organization and multi-tasking skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment to independently establish priorities and perform multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience in dealing with technical, operational, scientific and administrative staff, preferably at a national laboratory
  • Experience working with scientific staff, technical staff, and with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with all constituents including senior internal and external stakeholders and customers
  • Demonstrated excellent initiative and ability to plan, anticipate and identify needs, assess and resolve complex problems, develop and coordinate plans to accomplish objectives
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills

  • H10.3 - Radiation Protection Spec 3 - Requires 1 - 3 years of experience. The full monthly salary range for this position is $9,280.00 - $15,660.00.
  • H10.4 - Radiation Protection Spec 4 - Requires 3 - 5 years of experience. The full monthly salary range for this position is $10,924.00 - $18,433.00.
  • Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate\xe2\x80\x99s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
