Job Description

The Quality Technician trains employees to execute quality procedures; ensures the routine maintenance of all testing equipment; works with personnel in other departments to resolve product and service quality problems; oversees the Lab Technician; assists Supervisors with "in-house" quality decisions and performs all required administrative functions.




ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:




Compliance with all safety rules for personnel and facility protection as defined in the Plant Employee Manual. May train Lab Technician and review test results. May train Supervisors and Slitter Operators to identify steel defects. Trains affected employees in the use of measuring equipment. Maintains calibrations on lab test equipment. Makes decisions on the conformance of products to customer specifications during in-process inspections. Works with Sales, Purchasing, Production, and Customers on an "in-house" team to resolve problems as needed. Works with Purchasing and Production Planning on material problems and possible choices of material for a specific job as needed. Conduct internal ISO audits as needed. Performs testing on production jobs as needed. Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies. Verifies that jobs meet customer requirements. Assist Quality Management for projects related to research and development, production technology, and quality control. Maintain and control quality documents. Other duties as assigned.



EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION




Associate degree or equivalent experience; 2-5 years in the steel industry; 1-3 years in quality




EQUIPMENT, AIDS, TOOLS:




This person must be able to use telephone, computer, calipers, ultrasonic gauge, digital Rockwell tester, analog Rockwell tester, micrometer, hand tools, tape measure, crimpers, band saw, router, belt sander, tensile tester, and spectrometer.




WORKING CONDITIONS:



This work site is in the plant. The plant is on one level, accessible directly from the parking lot. Riding cages for overhead cranes are accessible by ladders; there are stairs in the rail pit. There are seasonal variations in temperatures from 60 to 95+ degrees; some exposure to diesel fumes as trucks move through the plant; noise level varies depending on number of machines in operation. Potential hazards include cuts and crush injuries.




SUPERVISION AND CO-WORKERS/ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:




Supervision and/or co-worker assistance available at all times. Unscheduled absences may result in failure to meet customer requirements due to insufficient staffing.


CONSEQUENCES IF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS NOT PERFORMED



Failure to observe safety procedures in when in the plant may result in serious injury up to fatality and/or damage and loss of material or property. Failure to resolve quality issues promptly may result in production delays, which may result in customer delivery delays, which may in turn result in the loss of business. Failure to resolve customer quality issues may result in customer dissatisfaction, which may, in turn, result in the loss of business. Failure to complete appropriate paperwork may result in inventory shortage through loss of material or improper billing of the customer.
