Essential Job Functions:



The Qualified Bilingual Judiciary Clerk is responsible for assisting the public and court-related personnel in English and Spanish; responding to inquiries regarding the proper completion of various court-related forms; and providing information regarding court procedures, both at the service counter and by telephone for Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. This is an entry level clerical position performing case processing duties to include processing all pleadings, forms, and orders pertaining to civil/family cases.


Assist the public and court-related personnel in English and Spanish by providing information about the status of cases or about Clerk's office procedures both at the counter and by telephone.


Maintain case docket by entering records of documents/pleadings as they are received using a computer keyboard.


Prepare new case files by reading pleadings, typing initial docket entry, and establishing case file folder for the documents.


Prepare summonses, writs, bills for costs, etc. via computer system. Index new cases and judgements using a computer keyboard.

Minimum Qualifications:



Education:

High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience:

One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Preferred experience:

English and Spanish interpreting in a professional setting.


Note:




A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.


A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.


A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Spanish Proficiency Assessments:




Selected candidates will be required to complete 2 Spanish proficiency assessments as part of the recruitment process.


The first assessment will be administered virtually as part of the screening process. A minimum score of 85% must be achieved to continue with the recruitment process.


The second assessment will be conducted as part of the interview process.


Candidates will be required to obtain a minimum score of 10 on ALTA Proficiency Exam before an official offer of employment will be made.

Knowledge:




General office practices, procedures, and equipment.


Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.


Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Skill in:




Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.


Typing on a personal computer.


Accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to:




Proficiently speak, read, and write in Spanish.


Ability to assist and provide information to Spanish speaking customers in Spanish.


Accurately convey basic legal and procedural information in Spanish, without giving legal advice.


Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.


Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.


Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.


Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.


Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.


Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.

Physical Requirements:



Sedentary work.

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
