The Director of Public Works is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing the planning, development, and implementation of public infrastructure and services. This role ensuring compliance with regulations, and implementing strategic initiatives to enhance community services. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, technical expertise, knowledge of highway and bridge construction, and a clear understanding of public water and wastewater systems along with the ability to work effectively with FEMA as necessary. A comprehensive understanding of Tax Increment Financing and the capacity to work with outside contractors as well as town staff to implement the vision and goal of the TIF District is preferred.
Responsibilities
Lead and manage all aspects of the Public Works Department, including engineering, maintenance, and operations.
Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient service delivery.
Oversee the planning and execution of public works projects from conception to completion.
Collaborate with other departments, government agencies, and community stakeholders to address infrastructure needs while fostering open communication and trust.
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to public works operations.
Manage departmental budgets and resources effectively.
Conduct regular assessments of public infrastructure conditions and prioritize maintenance needs.
Oversees and participates in providing customer service to internal and external customers; responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or civil Engineering desired. Master's degree preferred.
Seven to ten years' experience in Public Administration. An equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Must possess a valid driver's license, and have, or be willing to obtain a Public Water System Operator Certification
Experience
A minimum of 7 years of experience in public works management or a related field is preferred.
Extensive experience in project management, budgeting, and team leadership.
Strong understanding of engineering principles, municipal services, and regulatory requirements.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.
