JOB DUTIES: As a Public Information Officer, you will:
  • Provide direction and expert advice to the Commissioner\xe2\x80\x99s Office and Division Administrators in developing responses and strategies for dealing with issues of public interest and/or controversy to ensure effective and consistent communication.
  • Participate in developing agency policies and procedures for communicating with the media, the Governor\xe2\x80\x99s office, legislators, local businesses, special interest groups, other agencies, etc.
  • Direct agency responses to public information inquiries and serves as the primary point of contact with the press and the media for interview requests, press releases, position statements, etc.
  • Provide guidance, direction and agency-wide training to other members of Executive Management Team and staff on their interactions with the media.
  • Actively works to build positive working relationships by establishing trust, credibility and rapport with employees, leadership, other agencies, community members, the media and press, customers, and members of the public.
  • Hold primary responsibility for the quality and accuracy of all written communications for the Data & Communications Office including writing and/or editing press releases, brochures, public announcements, press articles, fact sheets, and social media posts.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITES:

  • Concepts and theories of journalism; communications; media, and public relations.
  • Issues and concerns affecting the agency\xe2\x80\x99s mission; the direction and policies of the agency; and issues regarding the state\xe2\x80\x99s economy.
  • Methods and techniques of writing; public speaking and editing; the role and responsibilities of public agencies and private businesses; mass media; and newspaper, radio, television, and on-line news practices.
Skill in:
  • Excellent writing, editing and speaking skills developed through demonstrated professional expertise and experience.
  • Leadership, program planning and implementation, and research and analysis while organizing the thoughts and ideas of others into a coherent and concise message either verbally or in writing.
  • Developing approaches to sensitive issues that have significant public impacts.
  • Dealing with controversy in a professional and objective manner; and in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with others.
  • Discerning underlying concerns, persuading, conciliating, and devising appropriate communication strategies and timing.
Ability to:
  • Assess complex economic and regulatory issues to determine their impacts on the Department, Montana citizens and the economy.
  • Communicate effectively, remain calm and professional, and respond articulately under significant pressure.
  • Negotiate with and persuade a variety of individuals; and motivate and communicate with a variety of personnel.
  • Align behavior with the needs and goals of the organization and serve as a role model for others.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the link between his or her own job responsibilities and overall organizational goals and needs and perform the job with broader goals in mind.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Your preparation for this opportunity could include a combination of relevant experiences including a degree in a field such as journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field or at least 5 years of job related progressively responsible related experience.
