This position is located in Pahoa, Hawai\'i. The East Hawaii Region (EHR) of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation includes Hilo Medical Center, Ka\xe2\x80\x99u Hospital and Hale Ho\xe2\x80\x99ola Hamakua, the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home and the network of primary and specialty clinics within the East Hawaii Health Clinics. Pahoa is located on the east side of the Island of Hawai\'i approximately 30 minutes to Hilo. The Big Island of Hawai\'i offers amazing rainforests, waterfalls and beaches. The hospital staff is community-oriented and strive to provide competent and compassionate care to every patient that enters our doors. It is home to the Hawaii Community College, University of Hawaii, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, excellent schools and convenient shopping.

SUMMARY:

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner will provide outpatient psychiatric evaluation and medication management services through the East Hawaii Health Clinics and the Long-Term Care facilities in the East Hawaii Region.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Providing psychiatric evaluations to clients in a variety of clinical settings during scheduled hours.
  • Assess, diagnose, and treat adolescents, adults, and older adults experiencing symptoms.
  • Understand the effects of socio-cultural-economic factors on health and illness.
  • Make independent decisions based on evidence-based protocols and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Prescribe, recommend, or discontinue drugs and treatments to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders.
  • Order and interpret laboratory or diagnostic tests for clients to provide information on general health conditions and mental disorders.
  • Counsel clients during appointments, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with counselors, social workers, or other treatment team members to coordinate client care.
  • Assist patients to develop self-management skills and provide education to assist patients with being an active participant in their health care.
  • Assist patients to cope with chronic health conditions, progressive conditions, and end of life issues.
  • Focus patient interventions and recommendations on functional outcomes and symptom reduction.
  • Apply current evidence-based interventions to treat health and mental health issues, such as self-care strategies, deep breathing, cognitive restructuring, sleep hygiene, problem-solving, assertive communication, and motivational interviewing.
  • Conduct an evidence-based suicide risk assessment and safety planning when indicated.
OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Provide care via Telemedicine.
  • Collaborate with primary care teams and other health care professionals.
  • Multi-task and manage competing demands.
  • Maintain ethical and professional standards.
  • Represent the East Hawaii Health Clinics in the community and maintain effective working relationships among co-workers, public, private, and professional groups.
  • Demonstrate competency in cultural awareness of the populations we serve.
  • Promote and participate in team-based care, patient-centered medical home model, trauma-informed care, and SAMHSA\xe2\x80\x99s levels of healthcare integration.
  • Adapt to the opportunities and challenges of living and working in a remote, tropical environment.
