Osawatomie State Hospital is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) and Adair Acute Care (AAC). Adair Acute Care are a 60-bed facility, certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.


Position is located at Osawatomie State Hospital, days/hours may vary. This position may require you to work weekends. A negative drug screen is required as a condition of employment.


All employees are expected to work in a harmonious and cooperative fashion with other staff to provide efficient and effective customer service: to use free time as available to assist other staff in the completion of work assignments and perform other tasks as needed; to contribute to a positive work environment through a positive, helpful, courteous demeanor towards staff, customers and the general public; and to adhere to appropriate standards of conduct regarding the use of leave, reports to work on time and in the designated fashion.


The Psychiatric APRN will provide psychiatric, and to some extent, medical services for patients at Adair Acute Care and Osawatomie State Hospital. This position is for full-time overnight/on-call shifts for both hospitals on the OSH campus. The incumbent's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, late night admissions, responding to calls from the unit regarding patients' psychiatric and medical care, prescribing psychiatric and medical medications, assessing patients' condition to determine need for higher level medical care, and subsequent care at a medical emergency room or medical hospital. They will enter required assessment, and treatment documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). The psychiatric APRN needs to be knowledgeable about diagnosing and treating psychiatric conditions using the current DSM manual as well as diagnosing, treating, and prescribing medications for common medical conditions.


The essential functions of this position may require physical strength to frequently push, pull, twist, bend, squat, walk, stand for extended periods of time, lift and/or restrain residents with or without assistance and respond to aggressive resident behavior with specific, trained techniques. Be able to observe and respond to residents in distress.


Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:


The Psychiatric APRN, as Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) will provide psychiatric, and to some extent, medical services.


As on call LIP, the Psychiatric APRN will admit, evaluate, treat patients. The psychiatric APRN will enter required admission assessments and progress notes and, if needed, discharge planning documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). The Psychiatric APRN will enter psychiatric and medical medication orders on the Electronic Health Record (EHR). The Psychiatric APRN will respond to calls from the unit on a timely basis, requesting patient assessments, medication orders.; assess patients who may need a higher level of care, coordinate with medical and nursing staff, notify the ER medical staff, and complete all the emergency transfer processes and paperwork. The Psychiatric APRN will participate in medical staff meetings, hospital wide performance improvement activities and other medical staff functions as assigned.


Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Admit patients. On a timely basis, complete and document admission paperwork which include, but are not limited to, psychiatric evaluations, psychiatric and medical medication orders, medication reconciliation, observation status, dietary orders, diagnostic orders, consultations, and others in the hospital EHR.
Appropriately assess and treat the patients' psychiatric and medical needs, pain management, dangerousness to self and others.
Prescribe psychiatric and medical medications according to established evidence-based practices and consider relevant factors such as safety profiles, effectiveness and cost. Educate patients on medications and other treatment interventions.
Respond to inquiries, concerns of patients/significant others on a timely basis. Collaborate with administrative and executive clinical committee members on matters regarding patient care with community agencies such as other hospitals, community mental health centers, insurance providers.
As on call APRN, respond on a timely basis to address standard and emergency psychiatric and/ or medical situations.
Participate in on call coverage when needed, including weekends or holidays when needed to ensure adequate medical staff coverage.
Be knowledgeable of and comply with hospital policies and procedures; Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), CMS and KDHE regulations; other applicable federal and state regulations of accrediting and/or oversight organizations or legal requirements to which the hospital is subject to; Governing Body and Medical Staff Bylaws. Abide by the ethical standards set by the Kansas State Board of Nursing, American Psychiatric Association, and the KDADS Human Resources Division.
Complete psychiatric evaluations within 24 hours of admission, addressing all required topics. Write progress notes after assessing and/or treating patients.
Maintain licensure, credentialing and privileging requirements.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:


Completion of nursing training in an approved training program.


Completion of medical nurse practitioner training in a training program approved by Kansas State Board of Nursing.


Completion of psychiatric and medical nurse practitioner training in a training program approved by the Kansas State Board of Nursing.


Licensing & Certification:


Current active APRN license in Kansas.


Current DEA certification.


Preferred Qualifications:


Two years' experience working with patients with acute and chronic medical issues some of whom have mental illness.


Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:


Positions in this class require that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services. Persons hired must also pass a law enforcement security clearance in compliance with policies of the Department of Aging and Disability Services.
