GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Special Agents are sworn peace officers assigned to the Division of Criminal Investigation who are involved in the monitoring, collection, investigation, and analyzing of various types of criminal activity, including drug trafficking organizations, homicides, sexual assaults, internet crimes against children, bribery, official misconduct, federal firearms violations, kidnapping, embezzlement, interdictions, as well as a multitude of politically sensitive cases and other high-level crimes. Agents work closely with local, state, and federal agencies and assist in protecting Wyoming citizens, their property, and the local, state, and federal government.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Conducts complex, high-level investigations pertaining to varying criminal violations.
  • Routinely gather and disseminate criminal intelligence and other information both in Wyoming and other states and at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Coordinate and communicate with local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and state and federal prosecutors.
  • Prosecute investigations in both state and federal courts.
  • Locate and interview clients, victims, and other witnesses in the gathering and development of intelligence.
  • Perform undercover purchases that require the use of state buy funds.
  • Knowledge of processes of state government including legislative and administrative processes and the guiding principles underlying these processes.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to criminal history information.
  • Skill in the use of firearms.
  • Skill in the use of law enforcement and surveillance equipment necessary to perform the functions of the position.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to speak to large groups of people, the press, law enforcement administrators, local, state, and federal officials, elected and other government officials, and the legislature.
  • Ability to promote and enhance coordination, cooperation, and communication among law enforcement agencies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of work.


Qualifications


PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

**Applicants must be P.O.S.T. certified or become P.O.S.T. certified in the State of Wyoming within one year of employment.
**Applicants must have the ability to be Clandestine Laboratory Certified by O.S.H.A.
**Applicants must have a valid Class C Driver\'s License

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of criminal code and other state/federal statutes applicable to law enforcement
  • Knowledge of federal and state automated criminal history systems including NCIC, NLETS, WCJIN and federal and state laws pertaining to criminal history
  • Knowledge of principles, concepts, and prevalent practices of criminal justice systems at the local, state, and federal level especially concerning high tech issues
  • Knowledge of privacy, security, and other related regulations
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques, and practices of law enforcement pertaining to high tech investigations
  • Knowledge of advanced law enforcement investigation techniques
  • Collect evidence and make entry into explosive, gaseous, flammable, and confined space areas
  • Must successfully pass annual competency tests with firearms
  • Required to be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Ability to travel statewide and nationwide
  • Ability to work overtime as required
  • May be required to perform in hazardous, explosive environments while utilizing protective equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:




Education:
Bachelor\'s Degree (typically in Criminal Justice)

Experience:
1-2 years of progressive work experience in Criminal Investigation

NOTE: Attorney General\'s Office mandatorily requires applicants shall have at least five (5) years experience in law enforcement, including the detection and investigation of criminal activities

OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
4-6 years of progressive work experience in Criminal Investigation

Necessary Special Requirements


PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Execute High-Risk Search Warrants; perform duties involving armed subjects threatening an officer and public safety
  • Work with confidential informants to obtain criminal evidence
  • Review reports and evaluate evidence and crime scenes
  • Perform wiretaps to collect information on criminal activity and identify conspirators
  • Perform seizures of firearms, currency, vehicles, and other valuables that are procured or utilized during drug transactions
  • Process and collect evidence from crime scenes and/or field investigations
  • Conduct surveillance of persons, business places, agencies, or groups as part of a criminal investigation
  • Provide verbal and written investigative reports; maintain accurate and complete case files
  • Investigate incidents or violations by obtaining information and interviewing witnesses, informants, victims, and suspects
  • Detain and arrest subjects on felony charges or warrants and transports or holds for transport to a secure place
  • Prepare and execute state and federal high-risk search warrants, make arrests, testify in state and federal court and the federal grand jury
  • May prepare court and grand jury exhibits for use by prosecutors
  • Confer with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and court officials regarding court cases, trials, evidence, or dispositions
  • Testify in state and federal court and the federal grand jury or formal hearings as an expert witness in areas of expertise and/or to the results of the investigation
  • Confer with, advise and train division personnel, task force officers, and local, state and federal law enforcement officers in various aspects of a criminal investigation, evidence collection and preservation, care preparation, criminal justice information systems, and problem resolution
  • Explain agency policies, procedures, and practices to representatives of other law enforcement agencies and outside individuals
  • Use, maintain and assist in repair or maintenance or specialized law enforcement equipment
  • Attend training courses, seminars, and meetings for continuing education, including training in clandestine laboratories and weapons of mass destruction situations
  • May act as Team Leader in the absence of supervisor, other duties as assigned
