Job Description

Under supervision by the Coordinator or authorized designee, performs PSG (sleep) diagnostic procedures as appropriate for job title, certification and/or level of experience.





DETAIL:




Performs PSG technology procedures under the supervision of the Coordinator or authorized designee (with general, direct, or personal supervision as required by level of experience and competency, and with clinical supervision from the Medical Director. Demonstrates understanding of protocols for various testing and treatment modalities. Demonstrates knowledge of normal and abnormal neurologic and cardio-respiratory anatomy and physiology as well as disease states encountered in the Sleep Center. Understands instrumentation, electronics, and computer technology as applicable to the practice of PSG technology and utilizes this knowledge appropriately to optimize testing quality. Calibrates equipment, troubleshoots problems, and makes adjustments, as necessary. Is competent in electrode/sensor application techniques for patient recordings, including neonatal, geriatric, and special needs patients, to provide optimal recording quality without unnecessary discomfort to the patient. Recognizes and responds to patient's personal needs, medical problems, and physiological events, especially seizures, cardiac dysrhythmias, and respiratory events. Prepares for testing, including set-up of all necessary primary and ancillary equipment. Ensures the safety and welfare of all patients, including all ages and those with special needs. Makes decisions which include using the age of the patients treated when appropriate. Obtains clinically relevant information from the patient, family and/or chart and documents such information for review by the physician interpreter. Demonstrates understanding of patient education practices and provides the patient with educational information prior to, during and following testing procedures according to hospital policies and documents such education appropriately. Demonstrates understanding of the indications, contraindications, and adverse effects of testing or therapeutic interventions within the scope of care. Institutes or assists with the application and adjustment of such therapy based on physician orders and established departmental protocols. Accurately reviews, and performs computations on sleep recordings (sleep staging, event scoring, clipping, or tagging of events and/or video etc.). Is able to generate an accurate, concise, and informative technical report which summarizes the technical aspects of the procedure. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection controls. Attends in-services and other meetings as required. Expands knowledge and skills through educational programs and periodic testing, etc. Assists with training of technologist trainees. Oversees scoring and testing performed by PSG tech I. Performs other duties as required or assigned, including, but not limited to, clerical work of the department, participation in community outreach events, performance improvement activities and accreditation required tasks.
Follows the standards of conduct and policies and procedures of St. Mary's Medical Center and applicable laws and regulations and reports violations through the appropriate chain of command, including, but not limited to, reporting to work on schedule, providing adequate patient identification, maintaining confidentiality. Annually completes required competency assessments. Maintains current CPR certification. Acquires continuing education credits as required to maintain credential(s).

EDUCATION:




Optimal: Completion of accredited sleep technology program with associate degree.


Prefer equivalent of two years of college level medical, science, electronics, or computer courses.
