Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Project Manager to lead complex fiber optic network projects from initiation to completion. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in OSP (Outside Plant) construction, proven project management capabilities, and the leadership skills necessary to drive subcontractor performance and cross-functional coordination. In this role, you will collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest standards. This position requires strong organizational skills, technical expertise, and the ability to mentor team members while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan, organize, and oversee the execution of highly complex fiber optic projects for internal and external clients, ensuring successful delivery throughout the project lifecycle.
Take full accountability for construction schedules, budgets, quality control, permitting, material logistics, and subcontractor deliverables.
Provide training and guidance to our construction and PMO (Project Management Office) teams and to liaise with subcontractors, clients and other contacts as required.
Review and analyze project plans, schedules, and progress, providing timely updates and KPI reports to stakeholders, including executive-level reporting.
Manage resource allocation and ensure project teams are effectively staffed to meet objectives.
Facilitate and lead weekly project meetings, creating detailed minutes, tracking action items, and ensuring they are integrated into the project schedule for timely completion.
Maintain clear communication with stakeholders, providing regular updates, progress reports, and executive-level briefings.
Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks, escalating issues as necessary to maintain project integrity.
Define program objectives, track progress against key metrics, and manage schedule changes using established change control processes.
Monitor, report, and optimize KPIs related to productivity, cost, quality, and safety in collaboration with other departments.
Provide actionable recommendations to Field Technicians, Outside Plant Engineers, and customers to address and resolve performance issues.
Read and interpret KMZ files and fiber network maps, including understanding cable specifications, buffer tubes, and color codes.
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of outside plant (OSP) construction, including permitting, boring, duct placement, cable installation, splicing, and testing.
Ensure compliance with permitting requirements, safety regulations (OSHA), and environmental constraints across all project phases.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or at least 5 years of relevant experience in project management and/or fiber optic technology or related field.
Strong organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
Proficient in project management practices and methodologies.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, particularly Excel, with the ability to perform data analysis and experienced in using project tracking tools (Smartsheet, MS Project, or similar).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interface with stakeholders at all levels, including municipal officials, field crews, and executive leadership.
Strong relationship-building skills, enabling effective collaboration across teams and with external partners.
Self-motivated, adaptable, and experienced in fast-paced work environments.
Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in high-pressure environments.
Demonstrated leadership experience, with a track record of managing cross-functional teams and subcontractors effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
PMP (Project Management Professional) certification or equivalent project management credentials.
Proficiency with construction specific project management software highly preferred.
Background in multi-state or rural broadband expansion projects (RDOF, BEAD, or similar initiatives) is a strong plus.
Over 5 years of project management experience in telecom wireline or fiber optic construction.
Familiarity with municipal permitting, utility coordination, and DOT requirements.
Work Environment:
Field and office-based work; frequent travel throughout the Southeastern U.S.
Must be willing and able to inspect construction sites, occasionally in adverse weather or rugged terrain.
