Position Overview



The Program Coordinator, Planning & Community Development positions support AML's mission by assisting local governments with planning, asset management, and infrastructure development. AML is hiring multiple coordinators, with at least one focusing on Energy Systems and Utilities and one on Transportation Planning and Systems Development.

These positions are ideal for individuals with technical or planning backgrounds who are passionate about helping Alaska's rural and urban communities improve the condition of critical infrastructure and long-term resilience. The roles are considered junior planning or project management positions, with opportunities for growth into senior roles within AML.

Key Responsibilities (for all coordinators)



Conduct research and analysis to support AML member projects in infrastructure, energy, or transportation. Support community engagement through meetings, workshops, and interviews to identify local needs and priorities. Collaborate with AML members, Tribal and local governments, state and federal agencies, and nonprofit or private partners. Assist in developing project plans, timelines, and reports that meet state and federal program requirements. Contribute to AML communications, presentations, and success stories that highlight community outcomes. Provide technical or logistical support for program implementation, evaluation, and reporting.

Focus Area 1: Energy Systems and Utilities



The

Energy Program Coordinator

will focus on technical and operational aspects of energy planning and community infrastructure.

Specific responsibilities include:



Supporting communities and utilities in energy planning, system condition assessments, and resilience improvements. Conducting research on locally sourced energy, bulk fuel, energy efficiency, and utility infrastructure needs. Helping communities evaluate project feasibility and navigate regulatory or technical requirements.

Preferred background:



Degree or experience in engineering, energy systems, environmental science, or utility management. Familiarity with Alaska's energy landscape and challenges facing rural power systems.

Focus Area 2: Transportation Systems and Planning



The

Transportation Program Coordinator

will focus on planning, systems development, and infrastructure assessment.

Specific responsibilities include:



Supporting communities in transportation planning, asset condition assessments, and maintenance planning. Conducting research and data collection for local and regional transportation initiatives. Assisting with multimodal planning that integrates roads, ports, ferries, and airports.

Preferred background:



Degree or experience in urban/rural planning, civil engineering, transportation systems, or geography. Understanding of Alaska's transportation challenges, including remote access and intermodal connectivity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



Strong analytical, research, and communication skills. Ability to synthesize technical and community data into clear, actionable reports. Experience with community planning, project management, or grant development. Proficiency with Microsoft Office; GIS or data analysis skills a plus. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. Commitment to equitable development and supporting Alaska's rural and underserved communities.

Preferred Qualifications



Bachelor's degree in planning, engineering, environmental science, public administration, or related field; or equivalent professional experience. Two to four years of relevant work experience in project coordination, grant management, or infrastructure development. Experience working with municipal or Tribal governments preferred.
