The Principal Systems Engineer will work out of the Sylmar, CA or Plano, TX location reporting to the Head of Technology, Digital Solutions in Abbott Medical Devices. This critical role will work with cross-functional teams to plan, develop, and deliver state of the art Digital Health technologies supporting our patients and customers.

The Principal Systems Engineer role will provide technical leadership for product development of new digital products. The Principal Systems Engineer role ensures logical and systematic conversion of user needs and performance requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. The Principal Systems Engineer role will be mentoring other engineers in systems engineering best practices as well as directly applying an expert understanding of applications, customer needs to be addressed, and architecting solutions to streamline product development.

WHAT YOU\'LL DO:

  • Provide technical vision, maintain integrity and direction to product teams
  • Perform Systems Engineering (Use Case development, requirements decomposition, activity diagrams, et. al) activities supporting product development milestones and drive adoption of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and its associated tools
  • Conceptualize and author product specifications, architectural and high-level design, functional specifications.
  • Engage and lead discussions with external current and potential future vendors / partners
  • Assess and develop testing strategy, and integration use case scenarios
Critical Success Indicators:
  • Successfully built and commercialized multiple Digital solutions and services from concept through launch using agile processes in both consumer tech and med tech.
  • Successfully defined a scalable and extensible technical strategy with clear delineation between internal and external contributions.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating solutions that seamlessly fit into customer and patient desired workflows.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE YOU\'LL BRING:

Required:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in science, engineering, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • 10+ years product development experience in engineering or science
  • Extensive experience in general engineering/science principals.
  • Extensive experience of contemporary design control and risk management practices.
  • Strong knowledge of defined development process that is consistent with ISO, FDA design control standards or requirements.
  • Expertise in the software, mathematical, or engineering process operative in the integration, evaluation and commercialization of medical device systems.
  • Ability to work on many subjects concurrently.
Preferred:
  • 12+ years of experience in a similar position, including systems integration experience/integrating all system components, system architecture, requirement/user need gathering, and/or end-to-end (ideation to commercialization) technical product development experience
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively integrate information from varied disciplines and work within a highly regulated environment
  • Understanding and tailoring of systems engineering concepts, principles, and theories.
  • Proficiency with requirements management and system modeling tools.
  • Ability to recognize various architectural patterns, apply them appropriately, understand strengths/weaknesses within those architectures and develop architectural variations as necessary.
  • Familiarity with multiple, diverse technical integrations, technologies, and processing environments
  • Experience developing regulated medical device software that strictly adheres to design controls and quality management system requirements
  • Significant experience working with agile software development methods, such as scrum and Kanban and exposure to working within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple departments, countries, and time zones
  • Self-motivated to complete tasks timely with competence; driven to self-educate and improve processes
  • Excellent technical, troubleshooting & mentoring skills
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation skills with ability to build trust
  • Results oriented with focused urgency, prioritization skills and ability to recognize/escalate issues appropriately
  • Medical Device experience
  • Solid understanding of the design thinking process, as well as a passion and know-how for influencing design strategy.
  • Certificate or significant education background in Human-Centered Design, UX/UI, Systems Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or similar field of study
