This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by initiating an accurate and complete registration and making required edits on these registrations. For patients with missing registration information, the registrars are responsible for initiating needed follow-up. Must understand insurance and their specific requirements as well as pre-authorization requirements per payor. Responsible for obtaining benefits to assist with upfront cash collections.
Job Duties
Performs pre-registration duties requiring good knowledge of hospital programs and procedures.
Initiates an accurate and complete registration and making required edits on these registrations.
Understands and interprets insurance, pre-authorizations and the specific requirements per payer.
Obtains benefits to assist Pre-Auth team.
Interacts effectively with physicians, physician office staff, patients and families on a frequent basis.
Uses the call manager and computer to perform all pre-registration duties.
Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Basic proficiency in operation of computer, basic keyboarding, fax machine, filing systems, and telephone systems or call center knowledge.
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy strongly preferred.
Knowledge medical insurance and pre-authorization requirements.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures.
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Must have accuracy in oral and written communication.
Ability to perform multiple tasks with constant interruptions.
Professional Experience
Preferred: Insurance and/or claims processing experience or 2 years registration experience.
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent strongly preferred. Relevant experience to be considered in lieu of degree.
