Job Description

An employee in this job class is responsible for performing clerical work of moderate difficulty in the preparation and processing of arrest warrants. Work is performed under direct supervision following established procedures. Duties require use of computers, copy/fax machines, rotating file cabinet, paper shredders and a remote headset. Duties also include some public contact. Work is reviewed in process and upon completion by a superior for accuracy and conformance with instructions and established procedures.



Duty hours: Day Shift is 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM; Afternoon shift is 1:30 PM to 9:30 PM, and Midnight shift is 9:30 PM to 5:30 AM (Permanent shifts are assigned) Monday through Sunday (may be adjusted to meet Department needs). The Fugitive Affairs Unit is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

An additional 7% Shift Differential pay for clerks who work Midnight shift.



INCENTIVES:The St. Louis County Police Department offers tuition reimbursement and education incentives for clerks who possess a degree of higher education from an accredited institution. They shall receive the following addition to their base rate of pay:


Associate's degree: $1,200/year
Bachelor's degree: $2,400/year
Master's degree: $4,800/year
Doctorate degree: $7,200/year
Education incentive pay is subject to confirmation by Human Resources and will include proof of an official transcript awarding or conferring the degree.

Per the Department's Collective Bargaining Agreement, newly hired employees who do not possess corresponding experience will start at the base starting pay listed in this posting.

Examples of Duties

Processes arrest warrants issued by the courts; checks computer for corrections and other active warrants; codes warrants with charges; enters, updates and cancels computerized warrant data using computers; enters warrants for municipalities that contract with St. Louis County; proofreads entries to assure accuracy; validates entries with printouts. Prepares executed and recalled warrants for return to court; photocopies certain warrant jackets for extradition purposes; returns warrants to court. Investigates individuals on felony warrants to aid detectives in the arrest of subjects wanted on St. Louis County warrants; checks subjects through the computer when arrested for Probation and Parole warrant entries. Prepares and mails 10-day notices to individuals with active warrants. Maintains large filing system of warrants; purges traffic warrants that have been in active status for more than three years. Receives incoming telephone calls from individuals, attorneys, family members, court personnel, law enforcement agencies and others; answers questions or refers to appropriate person or office. Answers 10-minute requests for verification of active warrants from various police agencies; sends computer messages in regard to individuals arrested through other police agencies. Orders office supplies for storeroom. Must acquire and maintain numerous REJIS certifications. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of modern office methods, procedures and equipment. Knowledge of legislative requirements involving arrest warrant disposition. Some knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic. Skill in operating computers and office equipment. Skill in interpreting and following oral and written instructions. Skill in explaining policies and procedures to others. Skill in processing records accurately and promptly. Some skill in maintaining a large filing system. Ability to communicate tactfully and courteously with the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public. Ability to type 25 wpm with no more than 5 errors. Ability to make decisions based on established procedures and policies and using some independent judgment. Ability to work independently under stressful conditions.

Training and Experience

:

Graduation from high school and two (2) years of general clerical experience, including one year of data entry experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

CITIZENSHIP: Citizen of the United States or valid work permit, and apply for citizenship when eligible.

AGE LIMITS: Eighteen (18) years of age at the time of appointment.

EDUCATION: Educational requirements and skills will be determined by the position classification.

ARREST: Must be free from conviction of a felony or a Class "A" misdemeanor.

MILITARY: Must not have a

"Dishonorable" discharge or

"Bad Conduct" discharge if having served in the military. All

"Other Than Honorable" discharges will be reviewed on an individual basis.

TATTOO POLICY: Department employees shall not display tattoos that are visible on the face, neck, or head. Tattoos which may be visible in a short sleeve uniform will be considered by the Chief of Police on a case-by-case basis. Imagery which may be deemed inappropriate or offensive in nature shall be considered grounds for disqualification. Applicants will be required to provide a photograph and explanation to provide context of any visible tattoos.
