Job Description

This is a

78-hour biweekly paid position

with the following schedule:

Monday through Thursday:

07:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Every other Saturday:

12-hour shift (shift times rotate)
The schedule may be adjusted based on departmental needs, school schedules, or special events. Occasional evening or weekend assignments may be required.

Under general supervision, performs a wide range of law enforcement duties to protect life and property, prevent crime, maintain public order, and ensure the safety and security of village residents, schools, and facilities. Duties include patrolling assigned areas, investigating criminal activity, enforcing laws and ordinances, responding to emergencies, and engaging in proactive community and school-based policing. The employee may be assigned to various functions or specialized units based on the operational needs of the Police Department.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesLaw Enforcement and Patrol



Patrols assigned areas, including school campuses, to detect and prevent crimes and identify suspicious activity or unsafe conditions. Responds promptly to calls for service, emergencies, and police-related matters within schools and the community. Enforces federal, state, and local laws as well as Village ordinances and departmental policies. Observes and evaluates situations to determine whether elements of a crime are present and takes appropriate action. Establishes control of crime or incident scenes; requests additional assistance when necessary to ensure safety. Uses discretion to determine appropriate enforcement actions, including arrests, citations, or referrals. Performs arrests and detention procedures in accordance with law and department policy. Conducts thorough searches for weapons, contraband, or evidence; collects, preserves, and prepares evidence for court. Prepares accurate and detailed reports and documentation, including incident narratives and investigative summaries. Testifies in court proceedings in a clear, professional, and factual manner.

School Resource Officer Duties



Maintains a high-visibility presence in assigned schools to promote a safe and secure learning environment. Conducts regular security checks of school buildings, grounds, and exterior doors. Assists with student arrival and dismissal, providing traffic and pedestrian safety. Responds to and investigates criminal activity or safety concerns occurring on school property. Serves as a liaison between the Police Department, school administration, faculty, students, and parents. Provides information, presentations, and educational sessions on topics such as law enforcement, safety, drug prevention, and conflict resolution. Builds and maintains positive relationships with students and staff to foster trust and mutual respect. Supports school crisis response plans and participates in emergency preparedness drills and training.

Traffic Enforcement and Emergency Response



Enforces traffic laws and Village ordinances; conducts traffic control during incidents, special events, and school operations. Checks vehicle registration, driver's licenses, and other identifying documentation. Operates police vehicles safely, including under emergency conditions, in compliance with law and department procedures. Provides emergency aid and first response assistance at accident or crime scenes as needed.

Community Engagement



Engages with community members to promote public safety and enhance relationships between citizens and the Police Department. Participates in community events, meetings, and outreach programs to foster cooperation and trust. Collaborates with local organizations, schools, and agencies to support public safety initiatives and community policing goals.

Administrative and Professional Duties



Completes all required reports, forms, and case documentation accurately and in a timely manner. Utilizes departmental computer systems, mobile data terminals, and dispatch communication tools effectively. Attends roll call briefings and reviews departmental bulletins to remain informed of current events, wanted persons, and special assignments. Inspects and maintains assigned equipment, weapons, and vehicles to ensure operational readiness and compliance with departmental standards. Maintains professional appearance and demeanor consistent with department policies. Participates in ongoing training to maintain certifications and enhance law enforcement skills. Maintains strict confidentiality concerning sensitive department and investigative matters.

Other Duties



Serves legal documents and assists with court-related functions as needed. May be assigned to specialized units such as Investigations, Traffic, or Community Services. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
