The Colorado School of Mines Department of Public Safety is a full service, community oriented law enforcement agency, providing 24/7 service to the campus community. The Department of Public Safety / Mines Police Department exists to provide police and security services to the campus community including but not limited to: enforcing the laws and regulations of the Colorado School of Mines community; exercising powers of custody and arrest; detecting criminal activity; investigating complaints and incidents; interviewing witnesses; gathering evidence; responding to emergencies and requests for assistance; providing traffic and crowd control; writing appropriate reports and citations; preparing cases for prosecution by the district attorney by executing warrants; and testifying in court proceedings.

Description of Job
Under the direction of a supervisor, this position will provide assistance, information and direction to all members of the campus community in the areas of crime prevention, personal safety and general security.
Job Responsibilities
Proactively patrols the campus and its facilities by vehicle, foot, and/or bike to detect and deter criminal activity, and assists the campus community members as the need arises.
Responds to and investigates reports of criminal and suspicious activity. Enforces criminal, traffic, parking, and campus policy violations and monitors all campus traffic.
Provide security during special and athletic events, enforces the Colorado Motor Vehicle Code and Colorado Model Traffic Code violations.
Conducts interviews with victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects within the guidelines of current legal practices.
Prepares written reports documenting investigations of criminal and suspicious activity for actual or suspected statutory violations, institutional policy and procedure violations.
Prepares cases for presentation in Municipal, County, and District Courts.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Residency Requirement:
This posting is open to current and non-current residents of the State of Colorado at the time of submitting your application. However, if you are selected and accept the position, you will be required to establish residence in the State of Colorado.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

• One year of college coursework (30 semester hours). Please submit unofficial transcripts for this coursework.
• Must be eligible to apply for Colorado P.O.S.T. certification or currently enrolled in a P.O.S.T. approved Colorado Basic training course. Successful completion of an accredited Police Academy is required for current Colorado P.O.S.T. certification. For more information, please visit:

Substitutions:
Appropriate experience will substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Possession of current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification will substitute for required education. Please attach a copy of your P.O.S.T. certification to your application.
Desired Qualifications:

• Training or experience as a School Resource Officer
• Knowledge of current and best legal and investigative practices
• Community policing practices as related to a higher education institutional setting
• Prior relevant state experience

Necessary Special Requirements:
This position requires that the employee be available to work 7 days a week, various shifts, and possibly in inclement weather conditions. The employee must be able to respond as required to emergency call-out situations. The employee is required to be on duty to perform essential and/or emergency services of the agency without delay and/or interruption.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be at least 21 years of age; possess a valid Colorado Driver License and have no:

• Felony convictions (Statutorily Defined)
• Domestic violence convictions (Statutorily Defined)
• Acquiring more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver's license.
• Alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten years

A copy of your current motor vehicle record (MVR) will be required as a condition of hire.
