Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current contract between the Municipality of Anchorage and the APDEA.

DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Police Department (APD)

HOURS OF WORK: Varies during training; 3-12s/1-8 schedule, which consists of twelve (12) hour shifts during three (3) consecutive twenty-four (24) hour periods in one week, and twelve (12) hour shifts during three (3) consecutive twenty-four (24) hour periods and one eight (8) hour shift during the other week, for a total of 80 scheduled hours in one pay period. Must be willing to work days or nights with various days off; as well as weekends and holidays.

Example of Duties

Under supervision, perform a variety of radio dispatch, telephone, public information and clerical duties in support of the Anchorage Police Department\'s Communications Center. Work with considerable independence of judgment and action within defined policies and instructions in deciding whether, where and when emergency personnel should be dispatched.

Answers emergency 911 and non-emergency calls, determine nature of call and routes it to the proper agency, or takes appropriate action to complete call for service. Obtain all pertinent information necessary for assignment of required resources. Establish priority of complaints and determines level of response necessary. Dispatch police personnel using radio and telecommunications equipment and provides explicit response information. Maintain radio contact with on-duty units and maintains record of all radio transmissions. Enter appropriate data on dispatch cards, computer and report forms, as required. Retrieve information from law enforcement information systems, local, state and national. Operate Computer Aided Dispatch system, telecommunications equipment as well as standard office equipment. Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Work under stressful situations with minimal supervision. Must be able to work as a team player in fast paced work environment. Requires knowledge of basic police procedures and terminology, principles and practices associated with radio and telecommunications procedures; filing and record systems; standard business office procedures; typing while receiving calls and dispatching personnel.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and three (3) years of experience which involved a substantial amount of public contact and office clerical duties; one (1) year of which must have been as a Communications Clerk I with the Municipality of Anchorage or the equivalent with another employer.

All applicants must possess and/or complete:

  • Must possess the ability to type at a net speed of 35 WPM.
  • Satisfactory drug screening.
  • Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check at time of hire.
  • Satisfactory psychological assessment (determines job suitability).
  • Satisfactory audiological exam.
Note: Documented typing speed ability must be attached to the application to be considered. The documentation or certification must contain the applicant\'s name and be current within the past one (1) year.

Preferences:
  • Dispatching and/or experience within a law enforcement or any public safety environment.
  • Ability to type at a net speed of 70+ WPM.
  • Currently possess a valid State of Alaska driver\'s license.
Additional Important Information

All internal applicants who have failed to complete the probationary period in Dispatch in the previous two years are ineligible.

TESTING INFORMATION:

Successful applicants will be invited to test. Testing will include satisfactory passing of: Nelson-Denny Comprehension Exam, providing proof of ability to type 35 WPM on the first day of testing, a audio/written exam, and an Oral Board.

Passing results of the Nelson-Denny Reading Comprehension exam are valid for one year from the date of the tests. The test scores/results may be used when applying for other positions within APD. Current APD employees are exempt from the Nelson-Denny Reading Comprehension exam.

Successful candidates will be placed on a ranked eligibility list for positions that may become vacant. The Police Dispatcher eligibility list is effective for one (1) year from the date following the conclusion of the testing and selection process, when the Certified Eligibility List is published.

If selected for hire, appointment to this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory passing of an extensive background and financial check, an audiological exam, a written psychological assessment and interview to determine job suitability, and a drug screen.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of the applicant\'s Alaska driver\'s license and a current copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaskan driver\'s license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. Internal applicants must have completed any probationary period for their current position, within the Department, to be selected. An applicant that meets the minimum qualifications but is currently ineligible due to probationary status in their current position is still encouraged to apply to be put on the eligibility list for future consideration.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual\'s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service.
