The Police Dispatcher serves as the first point of contact for emergency and non-emergency calls received by the Las Vegas Paiute Police Department. This position is responsible for receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching calls for service, coordinating response activity with officers and allied agencies, and maintaining complete and accurate documentation and communication in accordance with Tribal, State, and Federal guidelines. The Dispatcher plays a critical role in officer safety, public safety, and maintaining efficient operations within a multi-jurisdictional environment.
Key Responsibilities
Receive, evaluate, and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls from the public, Tribal departments, and external agencies.
Determine the appropriate level of response based on established procedures, situational details, and officer safety considerations.
Dispatch LVPPD officers to calls for service using CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch) and Motorola radio systems.
Notify and coordinate with fire, medical, and other emergency response agencies when required.
Maintain real-time communication with officers in the field, providing updates, hazard alerts, and critical information as needed.
Accurately document all calls for service, officer-initiated activity, radio traffic, and incident-related information in CAD and departmental logs.
Monitor radio channels, alarms, and system alerts to ensure continuous readiness and situational awareness.
Follow established protocols related to missing persons, domestic violence, hazardous incidents, critical emergencies, and high-risk calls.
Maintain confidentiality and follow applicable privacy laws, including Tribal codes, CJIS, and law enforcement security standards.
Provide courteous and professional assistance to callers, including information, referral to other agencies, and resource guidance when appropriate.
Support administrative functions such as entering records, updating contact lists, and assisting with emergency notifications.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff training programs.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Ability to pass background check and Tribal security requirements.
Ability to obtain relevant certifications (e.g., NCIC, CPR/First Aid, dispatch training) within established timelines.
Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Ability to type and operate computers, radios, and multi-line phone systems simultaneously. Prior dispatch, law enforcement, or emergency communications experience
Familiarity with CAD systems, Motorola radio systems, or similar platforms.
Knowledge of Tribal communities, cultural sensitivity, and protocols.
Excellent communication, customer service, and teamwork skills.
Understanding of Native American community is a plus.
Physical & Work Schedule & Requirements
Must be available to work all shifts, including day, swing, and graveyard shifts.
Must be willing to work weekends and holidays as assigned.
Must be able to report for duty on short notice in emergency or critical situations.
Participation in an on-call rotation may be required; while not a primary expectation, dispatchers must remain available during extreme emergencies or staffing shortages.
Due to limited staffing during overnight (graveyard) shifts, flexibility and reliability during these hours are essential.
Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods
Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
