JOB

This is a full-time temporary position, intended to provide support for an estimated 2 month period. Responsible to provide excellent customer service and expertise in plan review and permit issuance, ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and codes. Duties include conducting building plan review relative to permit issuance, procedures, inter/intra departmental coordination, communication, and documentation; attend meetings and provide preliminary permit review; and answer/interpret permit, code, ordinance and procedure related questions received from the general public via the internet, in-person, phone, and written correspondence. This position includes additional earning opportunities by obtaining ICC Building Inspector and ICC Fire Inspector I certifications, after which the incumbent will be assigned part-time building inspection duties, including residential, commercial, fire and life safety.INFORMATION REGARDING COMPENSATION: The full salary range for the position is $25.13 - $34.72.The general hiring range for the role is $25.13 - $28.90.The hiring salary will depend on the candidate's experience, qualifications, and education

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Accepts, reviews and processes a wide variety of permit applications relating to construction and development activities; checks for compliance with applicable local and state requirements; reviews and issues permits for construction projects; processes and issues approved commercial, residential, and fire permits.Review plans, architectural drawings, structural calculations, and specifications submitted with development permit applicationsCalculate and collect all required fees for building permit applicationsProvide information at the public counter regarding city building codes and ordinances including regulations on occupancies, structures, fire life safety issues, accessibility, energy conservation and other construction related issues.Greets customers, answers telephones and reviews forms for accuracy and completeness; explains permit procedures, forms, fees and determines if documents are missing.Contacts contractors and property owners and helps complete the permitting process; performs general administrative support as needed.Perform over the counter plan check of fences, walls, small room additions, patios, decks, garages, and other small construction projects.Determine Compliance to California Building and Mechanical provisions of State, County and local ordinances.Performs site visits; ensures compliance with approved permits and applicable local and state requirements.Coordinates with city and external reviewers to facilitate document permit approval.Responds to public inquiries concerning development processes, codes, ordinances, and permit requirements; maintains logs for permit distribution and turnaround times; schedules and enters inspections and documents code enforcement complaints; coordinates with appropriate internal departments (code enforcement, utility billing, fire, etc.) as needed.Prepares, processes and maintains various records, letters, forms, reports and files; sorts, cross-indexes and files correspondence and records.Compiles and routes permit applications; inputs a variety of information into the computer system relating to permits, contractor registrations, and inspections.Explains and answers questions for developers, contractors, and homeowners regarding applications process for obtaining permits, forms, inspection process and conditions of certificate of occupancy; verifies contractor credentials.Observe work and/or conditions for compliance with applicable local and state regulations and approved plans.Conduct code compliance follow-ups to ensure that corrective actions have been taken in cases where violations were found.Write detailed reports of inspections performed, code violations observed, and corrective recommendations offered.Identify corrective actions necessary to bring properties into compliance with applicable codes, laws, regulations, and standards, and explain these measures to property owners or their representative.Performs other related duties as assigned.



SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent; andFive years of permit technician experience or any combination of related education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's licenseICC Permit Technician certification is required or a directly related certification exceeding this minimum requirement, e.g. ICC Building Plans Examiner or Building Inspector certification, etc.
