Job Responsibilities

With our Agency\'s mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.

This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, Division of Inpatient Services, Morris Village Campus, 620 Faison Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.

As the Physician II, you will provide care to patients at Morris Village, including assessment, diagnosis and treatment of chemistry dependent patients. Maintains appropriate documentation in the medical record.
Responsibilities includes but are not limited to:

  • Admission: Completes history, physical examination, admission note and initial treatment plan on assigned patients.
  • Medical Treatment: Diagnosis and prescription of treatment including sick call and emergencies.
  • Supervision: Oversees Nurse Practitioner.
  • Provides consultation to other clinicians.
  • Administrative Duties: Prepares progress notes, dictates final summaries and completes necessary documents.
  • In addition to substance use disorders simultaneously assesses and treats other comorbid mental and physical health conditions.
  • Obtains mandatory certification(s) to prescribe medications for substance use disorders (e.g. buprenorphine for Opioid Use Use Disorder) and maintains certification education requirements.
  • Demonstrates knowledge about medications for the treatment of substance use disorders and provides informed consent with assigned patients.
  • Analyzes the indications, responses to medication, changes in conditions and therapeutic interventions to optimize patient outcome.
  • Participates in continuing education about the pharmacological and psychosocial treatment of substance use disorders.
  • Performs designated examinations and attends probate court hearings, as necessary.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements: Graduation from an accredited medical school, plus completion of an internship or one year of residency training.

Agency Requirements: Graduation from an approved school of medicine, completion of internship or one (1) year residency training, and three (3) years\' experience in medical services programs. Must be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the State of South Carolina.

Note: If any Agency Requirements are listed above, applicants must also meet those requirements to be considered for the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduation from an approved school from an approved school of medicine, completion of residency in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine or Emergency Medicine and three (3) years\' experience in medical services programs.

Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Additional Comments

The selected candidate must be flexible in regards to the work environment and travel. Must be able to work with repetitive unusual patient behaviors, including but not limited to combative, threatening, acting out and unpredictable violence. Must be able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds, may be required to lift more during times of emergencies.
