You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING DIVISION (CODE 105.3) of the RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE (CODE 105) located in KITTERY, ME. You will overhaul and refuel nuclear powered vessels, in a wide range of radiological control operations. You will assure adherence to radiological control requirements for assignments which involve numerous processes in several high skill level trades. You will serve as a major radiological control representative in "dry run" planning, practice, or "mock-up" sessions in preparation for major repairs and overhaul or refueling operations. You will take charge of response to radiation related emergencies and incidents until replaced by a senior radiological control supervisor or manager.

Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift. You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport. This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

GS-04:

In addition to the Basic Requirements (see Education section), your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the

grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector:
Experience assisting with applying standardized rules, procedures, methods, techniques, and operations that apply to radiological principles or health physics. Experience assisting with gathering, recording, and assembling pertinent data and report observations and findings to appropriate personnel. Experience reviewing radiological control practices and procedures. Experience implementing safety requirements.

GS-05:

In addition to the Basic Requirements (see Education section), your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the

grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector:
Experience assisting with applying standardized rules, procedures, methods, techniques, and operations that apply to radiological principles or health physics. Experience assisting with gathering, recording, and assembling pertinent data and report observations and findings to appropriate personnel. Experience preventing, controlling and investigating incidents. Experience assisting with documenting deficiencies in writing reports and assessments.

GS-06:

In addition to the Basic Requirements (see Education section), your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the

grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector:
Experience assisting with applying standardized rules, procedures, methods, techniques, and operations that apply to radiological principles or health physics. Experience assisting with utilizing radiation survey to implement radiation control requirements in assigned ship or shipyard area(s). Experience utilizing ship and shipyard layout (including location of safety and emergency equipment, drain water and sewage systems, harbor, contaminated equipment, and radiation sources) to plan ways to control possible incidents. Experience utilizing ventilation, detection, filtration, and containment material, equipment, and systems to assure adequacy of various standard containment and ventilation systems and procedures.

Education

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above):

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy.



Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents.

Applicants may substitute the following level of education for the required specialized experience:

GS-06:

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5

ONLY

in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

GS-05:

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.

GS-04:

Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.

Work involves performing work operations in lifts, on staging in ships, in dry-docks, and under adverse weather conditions which require significant attention to personnel safety. Work involves frequent, strenuous activities such as climbing vertical ladders, staging, or scaffolding in dry-docks and vessel areas; working in cramped quarters undergoing repair; and working in areas where footing may be insecure. Work requires long intervals of sitting and intense concentration for maintaining radiological controls. Lighter activities such as lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and crouching; and walking over rough areas also are performed.



Incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to, fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals.



Incumbent is responsible for following and enforcing all established safety rules and requirements, staying informed of all safety and health requirements pertinent to his/her work assignments, ensuring all applicable safety equipment is available for task assignment, and taking prompt corrective action to abate hazardous workplace conditions.



The incumbent must ensure that all requirements and guidance pertinent to the storage, use, and disposal of hazardous materials are fully understood and followed by the workforce.



Overtime may be required to support the radiological controls department as needed. Work may require some travel.
