Under the general supervision of the laboratory manager, the phlebotomist assumes the responsibility for performing venipuncture and related procedures under the philosophy, policies, and procedures established by the hospital and department. Additionally provides patient access and clerical assistance necessary to maintain the efficient productive operation of the laboratory. Qualifications:
Education:High school graduate or equivalent required.
Licensure/Certification/Registry:Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), EMT-B, or one year of phlebotomy experience preferred, preferably in a hospital setting.
Experience:Experience as a Phlebotomist in a hospital setting preferred.
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Participation in on call rotation required.
Must be able to get to offsite client locations for specimen pickup or collection during normal working hours and when on call.
Excellent communication skills coupled with strong customer relations skills.
Responsibilities:
Perform all phlebotomy duties (venipunctures, dermal punctures, arterial punctures, etc.) under a variety of patient conditions.
Collect non-blood specimens (urine, throat swabs, nasal/nasopharyngeal swabs, urine drug screen collection, breath alcohol testing) on outpatients.
Instruct patients on collecting non-blood specimens (stool specimens, 24 hour urine collection).
Process specimens with high attention to detail.
