Position Summary




The

Phlebotomist

is responsible for performing venipuncture and specimen collection procedures accurately, efficiently, and compassionately. This role ensures proper identification, labeling, handling, and transport of specimens while maintaining a focus on patient comfort, confidentiality, and safety. The ideal candidate demonstrates professionalism, precision, and strong interpersonal skills in both clinical and patient-facing environments.


Key Responsibilities




Perform

venipuncture and capillary collections

on patients of all ages in accordance with established procedures and safety standards. Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling and documentation of specimens. Prepare, handle, and transport biological samples following

OSHA

,

CLIA

, and

HIPAA

regulations. Maintain phlebotomy equipment, supplies, and work areas in a clean and organized manner. Accurately record collection data and patient information in laboratory or electronic health record systems. Provide excellent

patient care and comfort

, explaining procedures and addressing concerns. Follow infection control protocols and use universal precautions at all times. Collaborate with nurses, laboratory staff, and physicians to ensure timely specimen processing. Participate in continuing education and maintain current certifications as required.

Qualifications





+ High school diploma or equivalent required.
+ Completion of an

accredited Phlebotomy training program

+ Current

Phlebotomy Certification

(e.g., ASCP, NHA, AMT, or NCCT) preferred; Connecticut does not currently require state licensure but certification is strongly preferred by most employers.
+ Current

CPR/BLS certification

.
+ Minimum

1 year of recent phlebotomy experience

(hospital, clinic, or laboratory setting preferred).
+ Excellent communication, organization, and patient service skills.
+ Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures precisely.
+ Valid

driver's license and reliable transportation

(for mobile/home collection roles).


Preferred Skills





- Experience with

electronic medical records (EMR)

or laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Ability to handle multiple patients and tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with pediatric, geriatric, and special-needs collections.
