Summary of Job Duties:
The Pharmacy Technician IV - Sterile Compounding Specialist tasks will include those of a Technician I, II, and III, but with more advanced duties. The employee in this position must demonstrate special skills and knowledge not required by the other pharmacy technicians. The technician in this position will assist department leadership in supporting the goals and vision of the service line. The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor - Sterile Compounding Specialist works in partnership with the pharmacist manager to develop and streamline pharmacy improvement initiatives, including projects aimed at meeting departmental goals. They will help with maintaining, changing, and implementing new workflows, technology/automation, and process improvement projects. They provide leadership and assistance for developing appropriate training, education, and competencies for employees and rotation students. This position will promote staff engagement and great customer service.
Under the direction of a pharmacist, a Pharmacy Technician IV - Sterile Compounding Specialist will operate as a supervising technician in the cleanroom area while compounding sterile preparations. The dispensing operation includes gathering the appropriate medication, researching data in the EPIC computer system, compounding medications, maintaining appropriate and adequate stock, and other duties related to dispensing medication to the patient. The Pharmacy Technician IV - Sterile Compounding Specialist will prioritize work based on immediate need and rapidly changing workload. The Pharmacy Technician IV - Sterile Compounding Specialist will work as a team member to efficiently, accurately perform day-to-day work, along with any additional tasks or projects to help achieve departmental goals.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:High School/GED Plus Four (4) years of relevant pharmacy technician experience (i.e. previous hospital pharmacy experience, previous sterile compounding experience, hazardous drug handling, etc.)
Arkansas Pharmacy Technician Registration
ASHP/ACPE accredited technician training or certificate program
Within one year of start date, will complete a specialized certificate program in sterile compounding (i.e. through ASHP or PTCB)
Preferred Qualifications:B.S. or higher degree
Previous sterile compounding experience, hazardous drug handling, etc.
Previous management or team leader experience
Specialized certificate or certification (i.e. PTCB Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician, ASHP Sterile Compounding Certificate, 340B Certification, etc.)
Additional Information:
Responsibilities:Perform IV sterile compounding under the direction of a pharmacist
Perform basic aseptic techniques and pharmaceutical calculation
Assemble products for the preparation of parenteral medication
Reconstitute, measure, and add medications to a parenteral fluid under the supervision and checking of the preparation by a pharmacist
Prepare multi-additives parenteral medications fluid under the supervision and checking of the preparation by a pharmacist
Troubleshoot and correct drug delivery and equipment issues as needed
Maintain clean work surfaces, hoods, and classified spaces by using proper techniques and following policies and procedures.
Preparing medications for final check by pharmacist prior to dispensing
Process expired, damaged, and recalled pharmacy products
Upkeep and supervision of sterile and non-sterile compounding areas
Understand and educate technicians on the USP 797, 795, and 800 policies
Fill medication orders with ready to use products
Use the Kitcheck system to restock cart, trays, boxes, etc.
Assist with pharmacy automation
Monitor temperature, humidity, and pressure logs
Accurately pick and fills medication carts. Averages less than four errors daily while picking the medication carts
Process STAT/NOW orders as soon as possible using Dispense Tracking
Use hospital wide EPIC system to track medication dispensing to unit
Packages Unit Dose medications accurately
Understanding and handling, "Hazardous Drugs" and follows all policies related to medication processing
Monitors and processes Pyxis Stock Outs as soon as possible. Notifies a pharmacist when medications are ready for checking
Filling crash carts using the Kitcheck system. Restock emergency boxes and trays
Assist with pharmacy automation via Robot and Med Carousel
Answer/Receive and prescreen phone calls. Demonstrate good phone etiquette.
Manage Pyxis inventory, including accurate selection and refilling of medication. Loading and unloading medication and resolving discrepancies
Understand how to operate all equipment (CII safe, Pyxis, load printers, fax machines).

Perform "Tech check Tech" quality control regarding dispensing, cart fill, and pyxis
Communicate with other healthcare professionals in accordance with established policies and procedures
Deliver medication carts accurately and promptly.
Deliver Pyxis accurately and promptly.
Provide formal, detailed training to Technician I, II, and III
Provide formal, detailed training to Pharmacy students (Interns)
Recommend and be involved in process improvements related to the pharmacy department
Other duties as assigned.
