Job Description

The Nurse Extern is a temporary position for nursing students to practice delivering quality patient care in a variety of nursing areas. The Nurse extern will work under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse in providing direct and indirect patient care in accordance with common nursing functions and daily nursing plan activities.



Observes and assists with the delivery of direct and indirect patient care through the nursing process + Observes all direct patient care performed by Registered Nurses, such as patient education, medication administrations and various invasive procedures
+ Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides personal care, and emotional support
+ Performs patient care services and treatments as prescribed by the physician or as indicated by the patient's condition under the supervision of the RN
+ Monitors patient condition levels; reports changes to the appropriate individuals
+ Provides or assists with patient care services, collection of specimens for diagnostic testing, and preparation of patient for surgery or other procedures
+ Assists with transfers of patients to and from other departments and with discharges
+ Follows safety rules in all areas of patient care and ensures safe patient environment
+ Maintains patient data and records
Communicates patient/ family health care needs to the appropriate health care provider + Reports significant events and information timely to appropriate team member
+ Assists with planning by sharing input from patient and family with appropriate team member
+ Answers telephone and call lights appropriately and timely delivering information to staff
Maintains supplies and equipment of the assigned area + Ensures all patient care and unit equipment are in proper working order
+ Performs courier services as requested
+ Maintains adequate inventory of supplies on assigned unit


Education:


High School or GED
Must be enrolled and completed basic medical/surgical nursing in an accredited school of nursing


Must be within 12 months of graduation


Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
