Job Description

Please note that this is a seasonal position and will start in April 2026.



PURPOSE OF POSITION:



To oversee the Seward station, dock and related onboard service activities relating to Passenger Operations which includes supervising baggage handlers, tour guides, and station agents, connections with cruise lines, the passenger handling process, customer inquiries and complaints, and tour component services.

Duties and Responsibilities:





Provides special handling and oversight on a daily basis of all arrivals and departures of passenger trains that connect with cruise lines. Ensures that: the guests and their baggage are handled properly; passengers are directed and boarded safely; passenger manifests are issued, questions answered and guests are treated in a courteous and diplomatic manner. Acts as a liaison between Passenger Operations, Transportation and Mechanical Departments in Seward to ensure a coordinated approach to providing quality service to our guests.



Supervises seasonal Seward staff: station agents in loading/unloading process, sales and customer service activities; tour guides with customer service, commentary and the boarding/de-boarding process; and overall depot operations. Responsible for seasonal employee recruitment, selection, and training, directing and assigning work, developing work schedules, reviewing performance, disciplinary action, and addressing grievances.



Manages the upkeep of the building and grounds to include cleaning and maintenance. Inspects the cleanliness of trains prior to departure and ensures ARRC standards are met, resolving areas of deficiency with the cleaning crew.



Acts as liaison between Seward and Anchorage station personnel, vendors, hotels, cruise operators, and other transportation services regarding passenger traffic flow and baggage handling issues.



Maintains control, ensures adequate supply, and keeps current records of all ticket stock, monies, and other forms utilized in station operations. Issues cash banks and makes change orders on a daily basis.



Participates in team effort by performing other duties as assigned.



FACTOR 1:

Technical and Operational Knowledge



High school degree or GED equivalent is required. Bachelor's degree in business or related field preferred. Two years of passenger operations experience at the lead or manager level, preferably in the tourism industry. Previous railroad operations experience is preferred. Two years of supervisory experience is required. Must have a thorough knowledge of tourism/travel industry and ARRC onboard services to establish well-coordinated operation for onboard services and stations. Experience in contract administration is preferred. Must have a basic knowledge of accounting procedures to ensure accountability of cash advance fund, verification of daily business transactions, and submittal of it to supervisor on a weekly basis. Must have the ability to coordinate work efforts of baggage handlers, tour guides, gift shop sales associates and station agents to ensure (1) the guests and their baggage are handled properly; (2) guests are directed and boarded safely; and (3) tickets are issued, questions are answered, and guests are treated in a courteous and diplomatic manner. Excellent organizational and strong communication skills are necessary. Must have a valid driver's license.



FACTOR 2:

Analytical Skills and Impact



Develops improvements in or designs new work methods and procedures to enhance the efficiency of terminal operations.Observes work procedures, monitors telephone calls, and reviews work to ensure adherence to quality and efficiency standards and to rules and regulations. Directs, explains, and demonstrates improved work practices and procedures to attain efficient utilization of personnel.

Possess the ability to problem solve and exercise judgment over a variety of broadly defined duties onboard trains and at stations. The overall train and station operation can affect the customers' perception of the ARRC and revenue.



FACTOR 3:

Supervision and Control



Incumbent reports to the Manager, Passenger Depot Services. Incumbent is responsible for leading, managing, and motivating staff in day-to-day operations. Ensures that safety guidelines and best practices are institutionalized in daily operations onboard trains and at stations. Responsible for control and accountability of all monies generated from sales, cash banks, and ticket stock inventory. Manages and oversees depot and grounds cleaning projects.

Must demonstrate a high degree of supervisory skills to effectively manage direct reports who work onboard trains and at depots along the rail-belt.

While the Tour Guides report to other supervisors, the Passenger Operations Supervisor provides support for these supervisors due to their proximity to these employees on a regular basis.



FACTOR 4:

Communication



Contacts are with cruise lines, station agents, train crews, tour guides, customers, vendors, transportation service operators, hotels, and guests. Effective communications skills will enhance work efforts of the staff. Courtesy, alertness, integrity, and efficiency in serving the guest affect the revenue to the railroad and promote good relations in the community.



FACTOR 5:

Working Conditions



Work is performed in and around the Seward depot and onboard trains. Observation of the baggage handling and passenger flows will occur outside the depot and at the cruise ship dock with most of the customer inquiries and ticket sales observation occurring inside the depot. Work is seasonal in nature, typically from April to September of each year. Position will require some travel onboard trains.

Retirement Plans



ARRC Pension Plan - Participation is mandatory. You are automatically enrolled in the Plan when you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Employees contribute 9% of their Earnings on a pre-tax basis. The Railroad is exempt from participation in Social Security; however, Medicare Tax is withheld. Tier 2 Description (Employees hired after July 1, 2015)



Normal Retirement Age is age 65, however, the plan allows one to retire as early as age 60. The formula for a monthly Normal Retirement Benefits is 2% x Final Average Earnings x all Credited Service.

401(k) Tax Deferred Savings Plan - Participation is optional. You may enroll once you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Depending on the bargaining unit, there may be an employer match.

Insurance and Flexible Spending Plans



All plans are optional except the RR Dental Plan for bargaining unit employees.



Health Insurance Plan



A comprehensive health insurance plan, self-insured by the ARRC and administered by Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska. Coverage is also available for the employee's spouse and dependent children. ARRC and the participant share the premium cost. Bargaining unit employees are Eligibility after 90 days, and non-represented employees are eligible as of the date of hire.



The Railroad offers a Prefered Provider Organization plan (PPO Blue Essentials) and a Consumer Directed Healthcare Plan with a Health Saving Account (Gold Essentials). The Plans have the following features.



The Railroad also offers two dental plans.

The Railroad National Dental for represented employees.
