Job Purpose



Provides a variety of administrative support functions to enhance the operation of a program or division.



Essential Job Functions/Results


+ Provides information, reports, permits, and fingerprinting to constituents over the phone or in-person
+ Types, scans, or files correspondence, invoices, and/or reports
+ May review confidential and highly sensitive information according to established policy
+ Distributes all incoming mail to appropriate individuals and departments
+ Performs data entry utilizing desktop software and on-line systems to facilitate information processing and analysis
+ Assists with payroll and general office duties as necessary
+ Maintains department files, reviews content, and assured information is current and valid
+ Proofreads information for accuracy




Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


+ Skilled with interacting with employees and the public in a courteous and professional manner
+ Proficient with MS Word and Excel
+ Proficient in reading/writing/typing detailed correspondence and reports
+ Proficient with applying specific instructions to assignments
+ Proficient with filing numerically and alphabetically
+ Applies innovative solutions to problems

Required Qualifications


+ High School Graduate
+ Minimum of two years of related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

The Town reserves the right to limit the number of candidates invited to each phase of any selection process. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% on the Oral Board Examination in order to have their name placed on the Eligible List.



Background Investigation

: A thorough background and character investigation will be conducted for the specific purpose of obtaining pertinent data for Office Assistant positions within the West Hartford Police Department. Eligible candidates will be requested to authorize a release of personal information, however personal or confidential it may appear to be, including but not limited to, educational, financial/credit agencies and institutions, medical history, employment history, legal complaints, arrests or convictions, and motor vehicle history.
