Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Part-time Exercise Physiologist, Manhattan - Langone Orthopedic Center.




Under the general supervision of the Cardiac Rehab Program Director and according to established procedures, performs the duties, which are the equivalent to an Exercise Specialist as defined by the American College of Sports Medicine. These duties include but are not limited to exercise prescription, exercise leadership, patient counseling, and education in clinical exercise programs.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Responsibilities.

Performance Expectations:

Assist in orienting the patient to the Cardiac Rehab Program and to each modality to be used by the patient. Assist in taking of accurate blood pressures and heart rates at rest, during exercise and after recovery on the specified modalities. Assist in the monitoring of the EKG telemetry during the rehab sessions. Identifies clinical limitations and seeks guidance as necessary to address limitations. Voluntarily helps other staff members. Initially and ongoing, reviews medical records, observes and interviews patients, reviews medical histories including physicians' diagnoses and orders. Performs and documents all rehab session data and progress notes as needed within each rehab session. Maintain complete and accurate patient records. Practices in a safe manner that minimizes risk to patient, self and others. Demonstrates awareness of contraindications and precautions of treatment. Selects intervention strategies to achieve the desired outcomes. Adjusts the exercise prescription in response to changes in patient status. Provides patient and families with education in regards to disease process and therapeutic intervention to achieve goals. Modifies educational activities considering learner needs, characteristics and capabilities. Discusses treatment plan and/or associated problems with physicians and nursing staff. Follows the established policies, procedures and safety precautions in the use of all modalities. Examines equipment prior to patient use. Exercises judgement by referring situations beyond his/her ability or job description to the proper authority. Able to recognize and interpret changes in the patient's condition, taking indicated action and reporting the situation to the Program Director and/or Medical Director. Utilize available time and materials effectively. Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff. Assist the Program Director when required in the following: yearly exercise prescription/stress test updates perform initial patient interview/exercise prescription maintenance and calibration of all exercise equipment when appropriate


2. Documentation:

Legibly documents in the patient's chart, on departmental forms and any other hospital forms all aspects of care. Selects relevant information to document the delivery of patient care. Documents any patient or family education on the hospital Patient and Family Education form. Produces documentation that follows guidelines and format required by the rehab setting.

4. Professional Development

Performance Expectations:

Maintains knowledge of current trends and techniques by attending related conferences/seminars, journal reviews, etc. Promotes the field of cardiac rehabilitation. Demonstrates an awareness of own strengths and limitations and develops and implements plans for self-improvement. Accepts responsibility for continuous professional learning and seeks opportunities to learn. Demonstrates knowledge of current professional issues and practice.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology/Exercise Science/ Cardiac Rehab.

American College of Sports Medicine certified Exercise Specialist

Experience in exercise program planning, exercise prescription, exercise leadership and counseling with cardiovascular rehabilitation patients

American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification

American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification

Ability to communicate in verbal and written format

Knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology

Analytical ability to assess and develop solutions to complex clinical situations or unit problems

Has maintained knowledge and proficiency in Clinical Exercise Physiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation

Knowledge of arrhythmia detection and interpretation

Frequently lift/carry up to 25 lbs and occasionally lift/carry more than 75 lbs

Frequently push/pull up to 25 lbs and occasionally push/pull more than 100 lbs.

Frequently bend, climb steps/ladder and reach above shoulders.

Occasionally squat and kneel.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $30.22 - $39.10 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
