Summary
Are you passionate about nature and would like an introduction into law enforcement? We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Temporary Park Ranger. This is a seasonal position, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to park conservation and visitor experiences during our busy season. As a Park Ranger, you will assist in the patrol and enforcement of Wasilla Municipal Code (WMC) regulations relating to City parks and recreational facilities. You will work independently in a role of high visibility patrol and have frequent contact with citizens who are participating in a variety of recreational/social circumstances at City facilities and parks. This will include offering exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries, resolving conflicts, and ensuring a positive and enjoyable park experience for all visitors. You will be expected to work Wednesday to Sunday from 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm and perform the duties of a Park Ranger as a uniformed, unarmed employee. As a Park Ranger, you will begin each day under the direction of the Code Compliance Officer and Operations Lieutenant of the Wasilla Police Department. The Park Ranger must apply judgment, tact, diplomacy, and discretion in carrying out assignments. This is a non-exempt, full-time, temporary position without benefits. The expected start date is June 14th.
Job Duties
The responsibilities listed below are illustrative of the various types of duties that may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Perform high visibility, uniformed, patrol duties in city parks and recreational facilities using a marked motorized ?Ranger? vehicle and/or bicycle or on foot.
  • Contact and speak with City parks and recreational facilities patrons under a variety of circumstances ranging from providing informational assistance to enforcing City codes relating to park/recreational rules.
  • Collaborate with the Code Compliance Officer to enforce code and compliance.
  • Perform light maintenance and emergency clean-up to assure a safe environment in City parks and recreational facilities.
  • Attend special events and providing a presence as a city representative at various City events relating to recreational events or activities, such as parades, festivals, etc.
  • Lock park restrooms in the evening.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to learn and interpret city codes and ordinances relating to parks, recreation, and certain city vehicle codes.
  • Must be able to pass a basic background, criminal history, driving history and work history check.
  • Ability to speak read and write in the English language clearly and deal tactfully and professionally with people in a variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to use and understand 2-way police radios using proper radio procedure.
  • Ability to perform basic investigative tasks such as photograph and collect evidence of violations, interview witnesses, write basic reports, issue code violation citations, and testify in court.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience and/or Education:
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent required.
  • Law enforcement experience or criminal justice student internship preferred.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver?s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

Additional Information
Physical Demands:
  • Duties require working outdoors, may be subject to adverse weather conditions.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Sit, stand, walk and ride a bicycle for extended periods of time.
Work Environment:
  • This assignment is required to work weekends and evenings in 8-hour shifts.
  • Most of the work is performed outdoors and in varying climatic conditions.
  • Employment is temporary for summer months (approx. 2-3 months)
