The Position
Park Rangers (Commissioned) participate in operations, law enforcement, resource management, interpretation and maintenance activities at an assigned State park.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Lahontan State Recreation Area, covering 25,000 acres with 69 miles of sandy shoreline around the Lahontan Reservoir, is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join the team as a commissioned Park Ranger. The primary duty station at Silver Springs Beach attracts approximately 300,000 visitors annually who come to enjoy the outdoors, boating, and fishing in a dynamic desert climate with hot summers and occasional winter snowfall.
As a Park Ranger, you will be at the heart of park management, ensuring the smooth operation and safety of this beautiful area. Your role will encompass supervising fee collection, managing seasonal maintenance staff, and overseeing resource management. Public safety and law enforcement will be a major focus during the bustling summer months, where you will likely write citations, make arrests, handle accidents and incidents, resolve disputes, maintain peace, and respond to emergencies. Comprehensive law enforcement training will be provided. Your day-to-day responsibilities will be diverse and engaging. You will maintain park buildings and grounds, gather and analyze visitor data, collect and account for fees, and respond to visitor inquiries. Additionally, you will prepare reports, handle correspondence, and create and present educational interpretive programs that enrich our visitors' experiences. With the high volume of summer visitors, expect a fast-paced work environment that requires quick thinking and adaptability, including after-hours call-outs and varying shifts, such as holidays, weekends, and night rotations. Residency in the provided housing at your duty location is required. After one year, you will have the opportunity to advance to Park Ranger II, and this position also sets the foundation for further career growth into the Park Supervisor series. THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. APPLICANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
