ParaPro Praxis testing dates are offered at the school district throughout the year to West Ada ParaProfessional applicants. Test should be passed within 90 days of hire. Once the Praxis test is passed, reimbursement of the cost of the test is available through the district.

PURPOSE
Promote the educational development of each student toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, social, and psychological growth and maturation.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in providing the services of a secondary school library; assists students and staff in basic library use, library functions and in using web-based resources; performs related work as required.

As an entry-level position, the primary function of the Secondary Library Assistant/Technician is to assist in the operation and provision of the services of a secondary school library. Duties include providing support, training, and assistance to students and the teaching staff about basic library skills and functions, and using print and electronic resources; instructing staff and students about information and communication technology skills; and facilitating interlibrary loan transactions. This position may train and supervise student assistants and volunteers and is supervised by the Head Librarian and the building principal. The primary duties of this position are performed in a library/classroom environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Assists and gives direction to students and staff in library use, including using the web-based library catalog, locating appropriate materials in and beyond the library, and using ebooks and related apps, web-based databases, Internet resources, computer software applications, and peripheral equipment;
  • Performs library functions including, but not limited to, checking books, audio/visual equipment and other library materials in and out, and maintaining the library in a neat and orderly manner;
  • Monitors and may document work of student assistants;
  • Coordinates with teachers to find materials related to and required for teaching curriculum, trains students and staff on the use of the materials, and ensures materials are available;
  • Maintains organization of library resources; processes and catalogs new materials and equipment; facilitates interlibrary loan transactions;
  • Monitors and performs minor maintenance and repairs on books, audio/visual equipment, and other library materials;
  • Gives directions to and troubleshoots use of audio/visual and other presentation equipment;
  • Collects fines on overdue, lost, and damaged materials;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
  • Basic library functions, operations, and objectives; classroom management;
  • Operation and maintenance of standard office equipment, including computers, software applications, computer peripherals and audio/visual equipment;
  • Computer use, including email, Internet, word processing, spreadsheets and file management;
  • Basic accounting methods.
Ability to:
  • Follow oral and written instructions and observe District policies and procedures;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers and staff members, and other district personnel;
  • Operate and maintain a secondary school library;
  • Operate specialized library computer equipment and software programs (AV equipment, online cataloging and circulation database systems; ebooks and related apps; web-based research resources, and web-based utilities);
  • Implement online library cataloguing, circulation, and search systems;
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handling interruptions, and returning to and completing tasks in a timely manner;
  • Perform time management and scheduling functions, meet deadlines, and set task priorities;
  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Complete assigned training modules within 3 years of hire date;
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required and
  • Library, classroom, computer, or other instructional experience preferred; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person, and to hear sounds within the normal range of conversation;
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and comprehend, review, and prepare a variety of written and text documents and materials;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer, and specialized library equipment;
  • Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to stand or sit for long periods of time, bend and stoop repeatedly, lift at least 30 pounds and maneuver book carts, and work in a library and classroom environment.
