Pay Rate:


$55 - $120 per hour (based on experience)

Tentative Start Date:

January 5, 2025

Shift:

Day Shift, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Contractor will hold 8-hour clinics at assigned facilities two to three days per month.
No overtime or holiday hours are authorized.

Contract Length:

Base Year: 01/05/2025 - 01/04/2026 / Option Years: Four (4) one-year renewal options through 2030

The Optometrist provides comprehensive vision and eye health services across multiple Indian Health Service facilities in Northern New Mexico. Working primarily from the Santa Fe Indian Health Center, this role supports the mission of IHS by delivering quality patient care to Native American communities. The provider will conduct diagnostic evaluations, manage ocular diseases, and collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure continuity of care.

Requirements:



Doctoral degree in Optometry from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) Active, unrestricted license to practice Optometry in any U.S. State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. Territory Proof of Medical Professional Liability Insurance in the minimum amounts of $1,000,000 per claim / $3,000,000 aggregate Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience providing optometric care within a clinical or healthcare setting Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification or equivalent Valid driver's license Ability to provide three verifiable professional references addressing reliability, clinical skill, and patient interaction Documentation of employment and training history must be available upon request Must undergo and pass an FBI criminal background check conducted by the Indian Health Service (IHS) prior to beginning work

Responsibilities:



Perform comprehensive eye and vision examinations for patients of all ages Diagnose and manage refractive errors, ocular diseases, and visual conditions Prescribe corrective lenses, therapeutic drugs, and other appropriate treatments in accordance with IHS policies Provide pre- and post-operative eye care in coordination with ophthalmologists or specialty providers Document all patient encounters and treatment plans accurately within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Maintain and calibrate optometric instruments and equipment in compliance with facility standards Educate patients on eye health, proper lens care, and preventive measures Participate in community outreach or health education events when requested by IHS Communicate effectively with healthcare staff and leadership to support clinic operations and patient scheduling

Pay: $55.00 - $120.00 per hour
