We are seeking a knowledgeable and customer-focused Optician to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will assist patients with eyewear selection, perform basic eye assessments, and support clinical staff in delivering exceptional eye care services. This role requires a strong understanding of ophthalmology, medical terminology, and optical systems to ensure accurate prescriptions and patient satisfaction. Experience with EMR systems, HIPAA compliance, and laboratory procedures is highly valued. The Optician will play a vital role in managing patient records, supporting retail sales, and ensuring the smooth operation of our optical services.
Duties
Assist patients in selecting eyeglasses and contact lenses based on prescriptions and personal preferences
Take precise measurements for eyewear fitting, including pupillary distance and frame sizing
Enter patient data accurately into EMR systems such as Epic or other electronic health records
Support clinical staff by performing vital signs measurements and basic eye assessments when needed
Maintain knowledge of ophthalmology procedures, medical coding, and medical billing processes
Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations to protect patient confidentiality
Manage inventory of optical supplies and laboratory materials for lens fabrication and repairs
Provide excellent customer service during retail sales of eyewear products and accessories
Support laboratory work such as lens edging or adjustments when required
Assist in maintaining a clean, sterile environment using aseptic techniques during procedures involving contact lenses or other sensitive equipment
Requirements
Prior experience in optical settings or ophthalmology clinics preferred; laboratory experience is a plus
Strong knowledge of physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology related to eye care
Familiarity with EMR systems like Epic or similar platforms
Understanding of HIPAA regulations and medical records management
Experience with retail sales, retail math, and customer service excellence
Ability to perform vital signs measurement and basic clinical assessments for senior care or pediatrics patients if needed
Knowledge of medical billing, coding, and documentation standards in healthcare settings
Excellent communication skills to educate patients about eyewear options and care instructions
Ability to work collaboratively within a healthcare team while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality
