At the Central Plateau Cleanup Company (CPCCo), located in Richland, Washington, we are working to provide a sustainable future for the historic Hanford area through the protection of the Columbia River and the remediation of the Central Plateau. The selected candidate will serve as a Characterization Specialist within the Inner Area End States (IAES) and will be primarily responsible for supporting the characterization group to facilitate future demolition preparations and the demolition of facilities. The IAES Characterization functional group is responsible for providing identification of hazardous systems, components, equipment, and waste that will require removal from facilities prior to facility demolition. Responsible for executing the work in accordance with the quality standards and requirements specified for the project.

Responsibilities of an IAES Characterization Specialist involve supporting the Project in the following areas:

  • Maintain compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, directives, and other binding requirements that affect environmental aspects.

  • Perform all work safely and in compliance with environmental obligations using the core functions and core elements of the Integrated Safety Management System/Environmental Management System (ISMS/EMS).

  • Participate in work planning, hazard identification and control, work performance within the controls including feedback and continuous improvement, and stop work responsibility.

  • Act as the liaison between Radiological Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Waste Management, and Environmental subject matter experts for activities requiring the acquisition of characterization data for assigned facilities.

  • Support coordination of activities of the Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) organization when NDA is required in assigned facilities.

  • Manage the Facility Characterization Data Books (FCDBs) for assigned facilities.

  • Perform Historical Assessments for assigned facilities.

  • Develop field sampling/survey plans/instructions.

  • Prepare and sending Request for Analytical Services (RAS) Forms

  • Support development of Sample Authorization Forms (SAF)

  • Coordinate Data Validation and Verification as specified in sampling analysis plans.

  • Interpret radiological and chemical analytical data.

  • Develop characterization reports to disclose results.

Basic Qualifications
* BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 5 years of related experience

  • Ability to wear a respirator

  • US Citizen

  • CPCCo is a Federal Government Contractor and therefore required to comply with Federally mandated COVID-19 safety protocols. CPCCo employees are required to attest to and provide verification that they are fully vaccinated.

Desired Qualifications
* BS degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or Health Physics/Radiation Protection

  • Proven communication prowess (both written and oral)

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse staff members and work teams

  • Experience with MS Office software

  • Understanding of regulatory and safety requirements associated with the Nuclear field

  • Radiological and/or chemical characterization related experience

  • Experience working in a nuclear facility

  • Experience with radiological and/or chemical characterization, sampling, and inventory development

  • Experience with Hanford software applications and/or Visual Sample Planning

  • Experience with MARSSIM and MARSAME

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the D4 work process
