The goal of the Opioid Prevention Education Network through Michigan State University (OPEN-MSU) is to build the capacity of local efforts to create or expand opioid prevention, intervention, and treatment opportunities for low-income communities. OPEN-MSU supports a team of VISTA members and 2 VISTA Leaders as they serve with sites on projects that support local efforts in Michigan communities to identify service gaps; improve communication within local collaboratives and organizations; and, build the capacity of these entities to address the opioid abuse crisis.
Member Duties : The VISTA member will support (1) the materials development and implementation for the foraging, growing, and physical activity Gikinawaabi lessons so that the curriculum includes a full section on health and nutrition and (2) the creation of food resource guides and food demonstrations. This work will be done in collaboration with community members, use photos, images, and stories from the current PhotoVoice Project, and be supported by community partner organizations. Specific deliverables this VISTA will support include: interpreting feedback from newly developed Gikinawaabi lesson and materials, developing 3 Gikinawaabi home visiting lessons, revising the 13 supplemental information sheets based on feedback, developing 13 locally relevant food resource guides, collaborating with ITC-MI?s efforts to develop 3 live food-based cooking demonstrations, expanding on the interactive training for Gikinawaabi, and supporting outreach using created materials at community events.
