The Oakland Public Works Academy Trainee program was made to help people ages 18 to 30 who live in Oakland get work experience and learn job skills. The program also helps them get better at finding and keeping a job. It focuses on training people to work as Park Attendants, Office Assistants, and Custodians. The goal is to create a strong group of young workers who are interested in

What you will typically be responsible for:



Performing

general office tasks related to your assigned work area

Answering

phone calls and helping visitors, and directing them to the right person or department

Representing

the City in a professional and respectful way when speaking with callers or visitors

Using

basic office equipment and making copies of documents

Typing

and proofreading labels, forms, envelopes, and file cards

Filing

documents and keeping records organized

Following

office procedures, checking supply levels, and reviewing invoices and packing slips

Sorting

and delivering mail

Helping

the public fill out forms and explaining fees, permits, rules, and services

Performing

other duties as assigned

This is a part-time job, and you are not guaranteed to secure a full time, permanent job while you are in this temporary position. Your job assignment may be demanding and engaging from beginning of shift to the end of the workday. Depending on your job assignment, your work shift may require you to do different things from the day before or your work shift will require you to do the same exact thing every work shift. It is highly variable.

Minimum Requirements for Application

Education:


Equivalent to the completion of the eighth or twelfth grade, depending on assignment.

Experience:


None required.

Desirable Qualifications:



Prior experience in office work, customer service, or related training.

Dependable and punctual, able to communicate clearly, organized, good at managing time and tasks, comfortable using basic office equipment and computers, able to work both independently and with a team, and willing to learn and adapt to new tasks.

The Recruitment Process:

This is an at-will position, exempt from the provisions of the City of Oakland Civil Service Rules, per Charter Section 902.

All applications received will be forwarded to Oakland Public Works Department for further consideration.



Meeting the minimum qualification requirements may not result in further consideration, only the most qualified candidates will be contacted for interviews.

Applicants are required to submit criminal history information upon request after receiving a conditional offer of employment. If the requested information is not furnished in a timely manner, applicants will not qualify for further consideration and will be removed from the eligible list.

Disaster Service Workers


All employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
