The Nursery Assistant Manager is a full-time, non-exempt leadership role responsible for supporting daily nursery operations while actively participating in hands-on plant care and landscaping services across multiple customer locations. This position serves as a key operational leader, overseeing and scheduling a team of 4-5 Plant Care Specialists, ensuring quality standards are met, and acting as a back-up to the Nursery Manager.
The ideal candidate will bring practical soil knowledge, familiarity with perennial and annual plants and flowers common to the Upper Midwest, and experience in landscaping, irrigation, and plant design is preferred. Equipment operation experience (including Bobcat/skid steer) is a plus. This role requires strong organization, time management, communication skills, and a commitment to excellent customer service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as back-up to the Nursery Manager, assisting with daily decision-making, operational oversight and act as a leadership presence when working independently in the field.
Oversee, schedule, and support 4-5 Plant Care Specialists to ensure efficient coverage and high-quality service during the Retail Store season from April to July.
Communicate operational needs, plant health issues, supply requirements, and customer requests to the Nursery Manager.
Demonstrate strong leadership, organization, prioritization, and attention to detail while managing multiple assignments and locations.
Maintain and care for plants and flowers at customer accounts and within the nursery.
Perform daily plant care tasks including watering, weeding, pruning, trimming, planting, fertilizing, and debris removal.
Maintain annual landscaping beds and indoor/outdoor planters at several locations.
Diagnose plant health issues and replace plants as needed following best horticultural practices.
Apply fertilizers, insect treatments, and animal repellents in accordance with safety and company standards.
Assist with plant layout, seasonal displays, and basic design implementation as directed.
Represent The Claussen Group in a professional, courteous, and service-oriented manner at all times.
Provide excellent customer service and maintain positive relationships with clients and internal teams.
Safely operate company-provided vehicles and equipment; Bobcat/skid steer experience is a plus.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the nursery, vehicles, and property consistent with all Claussen Group standards.
All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
:
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (required).
Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and manage time effectively.
High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
Botanical and plant care knowledge (preferred).
Familiarity with soil conditions, perennial and annual plants, and regional growing practices (preferred).
Landscaping, irrigation, and basic design experience (preferred).
Ability to physically stand, bend, squat, and lift/move heavy loads on a regular basis.
Positive attitude, self-motivated, dependable, and strong work ethic.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to meet consistent attendance requirements.
Strong attention to detail and quality standards.
Pay: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour
