Description

The Nurse Clinician reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization\xc3\xa2\xc2\x80\xc2\x99s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Nurse Clinician at Developmental Therapeutics works with a multi-disciplinary team to coordinate patient care for their assigned team(s) based on disease type. The Nurse Clinician must have immaculate attention to detail and strong organization skills along with competence in the area of oncology. This diverse role offers experience in navigation, care coordination, and research compliance per phase 1/2 clinical trial research protocols.
  • All candidates must have at least one year of oncology experience.
  • Both inpatient and outpatient oncology experience is desired but not required.
  • Research experience is desired but not required.
  • OCN preferred.
Additional responsibilities include:
  • Works with physician and clinical research office to facilitate, coordinate and ensure patient access to clinical trials. The disease states include thoracic, thyroid, gyn, and rare disorders.
  • Central point of contact for all navigated patients; including interactions with medical, nursing, ancillary services, and when appropriate the clinical research coordinator.
  • Assists with the application for patient assistance programs for oral/IV chemotherapies for both on label and off-label treatment.
  • Oversees all genomic testing ordered by the oncologist, including counseling patients, educating staff, and following results.
  • Creates and organizes weekly clinical schedule.
  • Prepares and review medical history for new and second opinion patients for the oncologist and creates a patient summary to prepare the oncologist for new patient appointments. \xc3\x82
  • Works cooperatively and communicates effectively within a multidisciplinary framework to actively promote holistic care for patients and families.
  • Demonstrates self-direction and initiative in the role of nurse clinician, educator and consultant.
  • Interpret and define abnormalities detected in tests and procedures, taking appropriate remedial action.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other clinical and administrative departments along with outside facilities in order to coordinate appropriate patient care, as needed.
  • Performs nursing assessments and triage of patient care needs for new and ongoing patients, including patients on a clinical research study.
  • Triage and prioritize incoming telephone calls and MyChart messages.
  • Manage urgent/emergent medical situations as appropriate and in accordance with the organization\xc3\xa2\xc2\x80\xc2\x99s protocols.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and physicians:
  • Maintain a consistent alertness to patient care needs and take a proactive approach to address/resolve issues.
  • Complete/delegate follow-ups from patient appointments.
  • Prepare and lead disease team meetings to review patient status and anticipated needs.
  • Communicate with inpatient teams for admitted patients regarding directives from the oncologist.
  • Ensure proper scheduling for trial patients based on clinical trial protocol requirements.
  • Assist with administrative duties related to patient needs such as FMLA, HMO insurance, medical marijuana applications, etc.
  • Initiate and coordinate patient education.
  • Ensure that patients understand educational materials and can exhibit return demonstration when pertinent.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Licensed as a professional nurse in the state of Illinois.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support at the healthcare provider level.
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited Nursing program.
  • Two years pf experience in specific clinical area.
  • Analytical ability.
  • Communication skill is required in order to teach and lead.
  • Work requires lifting or carrying objects 35 - 40 lbs, and lifting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.
  • Interact effectively and collaborate with others in difficult situations.
  • The ability to visually check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine specimens, images or reports.
  • Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and/or contact with potentially infectious materials, radioactive elements and/or strong, hazardous chemical agents.
Preferred:
  • Certification in area of specialty.
