Purpose:





Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.





The Historic Preservation Training Center--headquartered in Frederick, MD, within the boundary of Monocacy National Battlefield--provides planning, management, and traditional trades services for preservation and maintenance projects throughout the national park system. A successful intern candidate will work with the HPTC Architecture Section to complete condition assessments, documentation, and/or design for historic structures.





Successful candidate(s) will be familiar with historic construction methods and historic preservation philosophy, including The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Hands-on experience with field documentation, archival research, material assessment, CAD and hand-drawing skills, use of Adobe InDesign, and solid writing skills are preferred. Please articulate these skills in your application; drawing and writing samples will be requested. Candidate must provide their own laptop, with access to, at the minimum, AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, and Adobe InDesign. All other field tools, materials, and equipment (including required PPE) will be provided by HPTC




This intern will work closely with the design team to produce architectural drawings and specifications for the of one or more of the following projects: Rehabilitation of the Visitor Contact Station at Fire Island National Sea Shore, NY, Preservation of the Anacapa Lighthouse at Channel Islands National Park, CA, and Rehabilitation of Bungalow 68 at Peral Harbor National Memorial, HI.




Description of Duties:




Interpreting field notes and measurements with the goal of producing accurate drawings of the structure's existing conditions from which the intern and design team will base the preservation/rehabilitation scheme. Research and design drawings, details, schedules, etc. for the preservation/rehabilitation of the subject project. Using the research and specify historically accurate building materials for use in the preservation/rehabilitation projects



Qualifications:




United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214 Ability to commit to a 26-week experience of combined training and hands-on
work
Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National
Service Criminal History Check.
Possess a bachelor's degree in architecture or related field Very strong communication skills (writing/editing) Very strong organizational skills Ability to work independently Possess a valid driver's license

Time Requirements:





Typically, this position is expected to serve 40 hours per week Monday through Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service. Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.



Orientation and Training:




Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.





Benefits:

Evaluation and Reporting:





As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.



Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
