Under the supervision and direction of the Chief of Thoracic Surgery or designee, and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant practices, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP); Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will be responsible for the care of patients assigned to the Thoracic Surgery Service in the inpatient setting. The APP will work in conjunction with thoracic surgery staff and a senior surgical resident/fellow.
The APP will coordinate and perform preoperative assessments, coordinate and implement inpatient treatment, finalize discharge planning, and assist in the management of postoperative care. The APP will obtain patient histories, perform comprehensive physical examinations to evaluate patients for thoracic surgery and for post-surgical readmission, perform bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, coordinate tests and consultations, implement treatment plans, communicate with referring physicians, perform patient education, prepare patients for discharge and sign-out patients to resident night coverage. The APP will have some responsibility for critically ill patients in accordance with service policies and protocols.
This is a Part-time, 20 hr. position, 2-10hr shifts
Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited American Medical Association-approved Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant training program. A college degree is required.
Surgical experience or surgical rotations, required
2 years of Thoracic Surgery experience, preferred
Must be certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants within one year of hire; must maintain this certification by completing required 100 hours of Continuing Medical Education credits every two years. In addition, PA must demonstrate continued competence by passing a re-certification exam every ten years.
