The Belmond Independent is seeking a News Editor/Writer to lead the newspaper's editorial content while serving as its primary reporter. This role requires a passionate, experienced journalist who can independently manage coverage, set the editorial agenda, and deliver high-quality reporting that reflects the voices and values of Belmond.
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Leadership
Serve as the lead editor for the newspaper, overseeing all content for accuracy, fairness, and adherence to AP Style.
Determine story priorities, plan weekly coverage, and ensure deadlines are consistently met.
Reporting & Writing
Write the majority of the newspaper's content, including government, schools, community events, features, sports, and local profiles.
Attend and cover city council, county supervisors, and school board meetings, as well as community and cultural events in Belmond, and surrounding areas.
Conduct interviews, research, and develop stories that inform and engage readers.
Editing & Production
Edit all copy, including your own work and that of freelancers or community contributors.
Write headlines, cutlines, and proof pages before publication.
Coordinate with production staff on layout, photos, and final approval.
Community Engagement
Build strong relationships with local officials, schools, organizations, and residents to stay connected with community issues.
Represent the Phoenixat local events and maintain the paper's role as a trusted, visible community voice.
Qualifications
Previous newspaper experience
required
(reporting, editing, or both).
Strong writing, reporting, and editing skills with knowledge of AP Style.
Ability to juggle multiple assignments under weekly deadlines.
Strong sense of news judgment, accuracy, and fairness.
Comfortable covering everything from government and business to sports and human-interest features.
Basic photography skills a plus.
Familiarity with small-town or community journalism preferred.
