Job Description


THIS ROLE:
The Sr. Naval Architect will work directly with the COO to support the project management and technical design of large-scale capital projects for Curtin Maritime. Sr. Naval Architect will be responsible for the actualization of Curtin Maritime\xe2\x80\x99s Long-Term vision through our aggressive Capital Build forecast. To achieve this, the Sr. Naval Architect must provide naval architecture support for capital projects, maintenance activities, dry dockings, bid proposals, and other company projects. This role will be seen as a leader within Curtin Maritime and will work with junior-level engineers to grow the Capital Build Team and Curtin Maritime\xe2\x80\x99s engineering capacity.
WHAT YOU\xe2\x80\x99LL DO:

  • Work with the COO and other stakeholders to develop project goals, create innovative solutions, and document the approach for new construction and modification projects.
  • Develop project specifications and issue RFP for engineering services.
  • Review proposals, negotiate, and contract with engineering vendors.
  • Manage engineering subcontractors and review deliverables.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies in support of project approvals and inspections.
  • Perform periodic project site inspections and/or direct other onsite inspectors.
  • Develop a process for organizing and maintaining technical data for fleet assets.
  • Provide engineering support for company projects as appropriate, produce and review/stamp drawings and calculations where applicable.
  • Develop technical standards and processes for future projects.
  • Project management and Construction management.
  • Hire and manage additional resources depending on project needs and workload.
  • Ship checks, equipment inspections, and photo documentation of conditions of vessels or equipment.
  • CAD drafting in 2D and 3D using AutoCAD and Rhinoceros 3D.
  • Deadweight surveys, vessel incline experiments including procedural document preparation and regulatory submittals.
  • Vessel and crane stability analyses.
  • Structural calculations and analysis; foundation design.
  • Deck layouts and arrangements.
  • Marine systems design.
  • Email and phone correspondence with vendors, suppliers, regulatory bodies, and others.
  • Administrative support for task management software, meeting planning, and other departmental support.
  • Project-related travel that may include commercial flights, living onboard vessels or in nearby accommodations, working in the field, and documenting findings by photo, written report, and drawings.

WHO YOU ARE:
Certifications and Other Requirements
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Suite including Word and Excel
  • Must be proficient in AutoCAD software.
  • Must be proficient in Rhinoceros 3D software.
  • Must be proficient in GHS stability analysis software.
  • Must have experience with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) steel vessel design rules and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 46: Shipping.
  • A TWIC card and unrestricted travel within the US are required for this position.

  • Ability to organize and manage multiple task assignments, working with supervisor to prioritize and complete work on time.
  • Excellent communication both written and verbal.

  • Proactive and hard-working: a self-starter that anticipates new tasks and prepares for them.
  • Able to work with project teams composed of design engineers, skilled labor, fabricators, and vessel operators.

Physical Aptitudes
  • Able to climb ladders and maneuver in tight and confined spaces below deck.
  • Able to take measurements and photographs, reliably hand-sketch details, and document as-found conditions of vessels and equipment.
  • Work in shipyards and onboard vessels for the purpose of inspection, troubleshooting, and observing tests and trials.
  • Wear required PPE while onsite or on shift. PPE includes-but is not exclusive to-steel toe shoes, work vests (PFDs), hard hats, hearing and eye protection, and masks.
  • Comfortable climbing in, on, and around boats and over gangways.
  • Travel by plane and car.
