Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Natural Resource Scientist to join our Natural Resources team. This position would preferably be based in one of our North Dakota offices (Fargo, Bismarck); however, we are also open to basing a candidate remotely. Our Natural Resources team spends much of the growing season in the field completing wetland delineations, evaluating potential restoration sites, wetland mitigation monitoring, soil surveys, habitat assessments, avian and wildlife surveys/monitoring, vegetation surveys, as well as office duties including, but not limited to, data analysis, reporting, restoration plans and permit application development. On a day-to-day basis, our team members also create databases and analyze field data, conduct literature research, write environmental review documents (environmental assessments, environmental impact statements), biological assessments for threatened and endangered species, wetland mitigation plans, permit applications and other technical reports, evaluate data and create maps using ArcGIS, coordinate with local, state, federal agencies, and communicate with our clients. For this position, we are seeking a candidate who not only possesses these types of technical skills but also has significant skills and experience in wetland regulatory matters, particularly the Wetland Conservation Act, National Food Security Act, and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. We have a multitude of Wetland Mitigation projects in Minnesota and the Dakotas and this position will be focused on overseeing and managing some of these projects.

Your Key Responsibilities

Performance of field work related to wetland and other natural resource surveys, reports, restoration plans and permit applications primarily in the Dakotas but throughout the Upper Midwest

Working effectively with other team members in completing these types of surveys, reports and applications

Development of work plans, schedules and budgets for proposals

Data collection and analysis

Technical report writing including environmental review documents

ArcGIS-online mapping and analysis

Overnight travel as needed

Organize and direct field teams for a wide variety of clients and project types

Provide quality assurance/quality control of project deliverables

This position may require up to 50% travel for project work

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Experience in leading and performing field sampling techniques and using scientific equipment such as hand-held GPS units, data entry devices (tablets, iPads, etc.), soil augers, binoculars, other sampling equipment

Advanced technical writing skills sufficient to draft professional plans, technical reports, correspondence, permit applications, etc.

Desire and ability to work in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines

Strong communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with internal and external clients

Ability to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions as needed

Computer literacy, including knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, and word processing, specifically Microsoft Office products

Experience using GIS software and ESRI ArcMap programs preferred

Driver\'s License with an acceptable driving record

Education and Experience

Bachelor\'s Degree in natural resources, environmental science/studies, soils, biology, botany or related field. Master\'s Degree preferred

5 years of experience required; 10 or more years of experience preferred.

Strong background in wetland science within the Midwest and Great Plains regions preferred

Prior experience with Wetland Mitigation and Banking preferred

Prior NEPA experience a plus

Prior consulting work-related experience conducting field surveys, data analysis, technical report and permit application writing preferred

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
