Native Aquatic Technician II





As a Native Aquatic Technician in the Southern Region, you will assist in conservation and restoration efforts of various native species including some that are endangered or threatened. Additionally, you will oversee the Urban Wildlife program, mitigating interactions between the public and wildlife.

Responsibilities

As the Native Aquatics Technician, you will:

Manage the Urban Wildlife Team; scheduling and coordinating with other technicians to resolve potential conflicts between the public and local wildlife, and maintaining records of wildlife interactions. Manage incident log, write monthly and annual reports for Urban Wildlife Program. Assist with monitoring endangered and sensitive species of native fish, including Virgin River Chub, Woundfin, Virgin Spinedace, Least Chub, Southern Leatherside, and more. Assist with other species surveys including reptiles, amphibians, and mollusks. Train and lead seasonal technicians in the field. Assist with habitat restoration activities.

Required/Minimum Qualifications:



Interest in native wildlife management and conservation, particularly with fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Must be able to represent the division professionally to the public. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to take the lead on various projects and coordinate with a team. Ability to collect, compile, analyze and summarize data in written and oral report. Ability to work independently and with a team.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:



Preferred:

Preferred Bachelors degree in Biology, Conservation, Wildlife and/or Fish Management, or related field. Or directly related work experience equivalent. Preferred experience capturing and handling wildlife, including mammals and reptiles. Preferred experience using seines, minnow traps, and hoop nets to catch and monitor fish. Knowledge of flora and fauna of Utah with good field identification skills. Knowledge of state and federal wildlife and environmental regulations. Skills in data analysis, proposal writing, and technical scientific report writing.

Working Conditions

Risks that require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment (e.g., working around operating machines, hazardous chemicals, etc.) Physically demanding position that includes heavy lifting, rafting/boating/canoeing in remote locations, and working outdoors in inclement weather subject to all four seasons. Overnight camping in remote locations for several days at a time is necessary for many field surveys.

RequirementsMust be able to work in rivers and know how to swim. Should be able to carry heavy equipment and packs for long distances to remote areas. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule under harsh and adverse field conditions. On-call and travel are required. Valid Driver's License Must be comfortable with firearms; non-law enforcement firearm training will be provided.

Work Schedule: 40 hours a week / 5 days a week.*
