Parnassus Preparatory Academy is seeking an in-person
music teacher
to join our team beginning
January 5th
. The primary emphasis of this position is musical direction, including leading rehearsals, teaching music literacy, and preparing students for the Spring Recitation Events. The candidate must be able to play piano and accompany the chorus as needed for instruction and performances.
This role also includes teaching general music, music appreciation, and providing instruction in vocal techniques and ensemble skills across all grade levels,
Junior Kindergarten through 12th grade
. Candidates should be comfortable teaching with effective classroom management and general music teaching methods.
Weekly Schedule and Hours
Music classes meet:
Monday:
2:15 to 3:30 PM (Point Vicente location)
Thursday and Friday:
1:00 to 3:30 PM (Rolling Hills Estates location)
One Friday per week:
8:30 to 9:00 AM (Redondo Beach location)
This position includes approximately
7 in-person teaching hours per week
and
3 hours of paid preparation time
, for a total of
10 paid hours weekly
. Additional paid time is provided for performances. There is some flexibility in hours based on outside commitments.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as musical director for Spring Recitation Events.
Lead rehearsals for multiple grade levels, guiding students in vocal technique, ensemble skills, and performance readiness.
Teach general music instruction and music appreciation classes.
Provide piano accompaniment as needed for instruction, rehearsals, or performances.
Select repertoire appropriate for each grade level and aligned with student development.
Foster student confidence, musical literacy, and appreciation for music.
Maintain an organized, positive, and engaging classroom environment.
Collaborate with faculty and site directors regarding music instruction and performance logistics.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong musical leadership with ability to direct vocal ensembles.
Proficiency in piano to accompany rehearsals or performances.
Knowledge of general music instruction, teaching methods, and classroom management.
Ability to inspire students and help them develop musical skills and confidence.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with students, faculty, and families.
Education and Experience
Formal training in music, music education, or performance.
Experience directing choirs or teaching music in a school or community setting preferred.
Experience accompanying vocalists or ensembles is helpful.
Prior experience working with school-aged children is a plus.

A teaching credential is not required, and candidates do not need prior classical education experience. Preference is given to candidates with strong subject knowledge or an advanced degree.
