Position Summary

Participate in the development, design, planning, fabrication and installation of exhibits of museum permanent and featured exhibits; coordinate the removal, retrieval, packaging, and transportation of incoming and outgoing loans and exhibits; ensure the physical integrity of loaned and permanent collection art and artifacts by utilizing knowledge of proper handling policies and procedures.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

The City of Albuquerque's Department of Arts & Culture seeks a skilled Museum Preparator to join the exhibition and collections care team at the Albuquerque Museum. This hands-on role supports the design, fabrication, and installation of exhibitions by crafting custom mounts and display elements, handling and installing artworks and artifacts, and ensuring professional standards of presentation and care. Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.



Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fine arts, art history or related field;

and



Two (2) years experience working with museum or gallery collections in any of the following areas: designing exhibits, constructing and fabricating exhibits, installing exhibits or ensuring proper handling and packing of art and/or artifacts.



ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:





Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain within ninety (90) days from date of hire.



Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.



Possession of a Fork-lift Operator Certificate within six (6) months from date of hire.

Operations, policies and procedures of a museum program Principles and procedures used in the design and installation of museum exhibits Modern practices and procedures of graphics Woodworking, metal working, plastics, casting and electrical circuits Design, fabrication, construction and installation of museum exhibits Artistic material and process Display ad lighting techniques Principles of proper storage of art objects and history artifacts Safe art and artifact storage, packing, crating and transporting techniques and procedures Art and artifact handling practices, procedures and standards Conservation methods employed for the preservation of museum collections Operational characteristics of carpentry equipment and tools Methods used for the acquisition and safe transportation of works of art Collection management database software Digital photography

Monitor and maintain a variety of museum exhibits Monitor the museum environment with hygrothermographs and light meters Operate a variety of carpentry equipment in a safe and effective manner Construct mounts and security devices for exhibits using various methods Interpret plans and estimate the time, materials and labor needed for assigned tasks Communicate clearly and concisely Work on multiple projects simultaneously under pressure and under deadlines Work independently in the absence of supervision Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations * Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
