General Summary:



The Monitor Technician is responsible for monitoring patient cardiac rhythms via a telemetry monitoring system; documenting and identifying patient rhythms and notifying appropriate nursing personnel of changes in the patient's cardiac rhythm. Maintain telemetry equipment and supplies. Take direction from the Monitor Technician II during code situations.


This position also acts as a Virtual Sitter, remotely monitoring patients in a hospital setting via a video and audio system to ensure the patient's safety and prevent potential risks including, but not limited to falls, self-harm, or elopement.


This role provides continuous observation and immediate intervention by communicating with the patient and alerting on-site staff to any concerns. The team member functions as an essential, non-clinical member of the care team, enhancing patient safety and supporting efficient resource allocation for the hospital.





Responsibilities:



1. Observes cardiac rhythms in all patients. Differentiates irregular rhythms from regular rhythms. Differentiates premature beats from escape beats.


2. Documents rhythm strips every 8 hours, or whenever rhythm changes occur. Calculates heart rate measures cardiac cycle intervals (PR, QRS, QT) and interprets rhythm.


3. Recognizes life-threatening dysrhythmias and verifies monitor alarm, reporting changes in rhythm to responsible RN.


4. Identifies correct functioning of pacemakers and notifies RN whenever malfunctions occur, following established guidelines.


5. Notifies appropriate individuals of telemetry supply stock levels and when supplies need to be ordered.


6. Operates complex cardiac monitoring systems, including ECG rhythm screens, computerized dysrhythmia detection system, and rhythm strip printers.


7. Maintains accurate neat account of patient's cardiac monitoring status during episode of care.


8. Notifies appropriate nursing staff of pertinent data, identifies information including, but not limited to, patient's name, room number, cardiac rhythm, dysrhythmia, and or life-threatening situations.


9. Contacts biomedical engineering when appropriate for monitor equipment malfunctions.


10. Gives and receives reports on pertinent patient/monitor data to/from oncoming/offgoing shift personnel and/or remote monitoring facilities.


11. Responsible for the general cleaning, storing, and maintaining unit equipment, set up, and care of monitoring equipment.


12. Participates in educational programs to maintain or increase job skills.


13. May change batteries and lead wires on telemetry transmitters.


14. Trouble-shoot monitoring equipment for immediately correctable problems such as a. printer paper changes; b. low battery/out of range occurrences; c. lead wire/electrode placement; d. monitor transmitter malfunctions; e. loss of transmission due to power outage and/or telephone disconnection.


15. Continuously monitor assigned patients through live video feeds, maintaining constant visual contact.


16. Observe patients for at-risk behaviors, changes in condition, or any signs of distress.


17. Use two-way audio to provide patient reassurance, offer verbal redirection from unsafe actions, and gather patient requests.


18. Promptly and clearly notify on-site nurses or other clinical staff of any issues, emergencies, or changes in patient status requiring intervention.


19. Accurately document observations, interactions, and any interventions performed according to hospital protocol


20. Effectively use the hospital's video monitoring software, communication platforms, and other necessary technology.


21. Adhere strictly to hospital policies and regulations regarding patient privacy and data security


22. Work cooperatively with on-site staff as an active member of the care team, participating in necessary briefings or handoffs


23. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.







Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:



Education: High School Diploma or GED

; Successful completion of a Basic Cardiac Rhythm Recognition Course offered through Education Department within 90 days of position acceptance.

Required:

No previous experience required with cardiac monitoring; however, within 90 days must demonstrate proficiency in cardiac monitoring and successful completion of the tutorial and skill validation checklist. Prior experience in healthcare support, customer service, or security role is benefit with virtual sitting.





Preferred:

Proficiency in using audio-visual monitoring software and virtual communication tools. 6 months' experience with cardiac monitoring and or Virtual Sitting.
